i'm joined by afl-cio president richard trumpka. it is the largest union.differently in the u.s./canada/mexico trade agreement. >> to do that let me frame the issue. mexico has had a low wage strategy. they keep wages artificially low so they can get investment and jobs out of canada. the mechanism they used to do that was called a protectionist contract. a protectionist contract was negotiated between a sham union supported by the old administration and employers. there are over 700,000 of those protectionist contracts in mexico right now. those protectionist contracts in mexico right now the agreement says they have to get rid of all 700,000 in four years. that means they have to get rid of 175,000 a year. get rid of them and have 175,000 votes a year. we don't think they can do that. we think they need to show us their ability, the infrastructure to do that and resources to do that, then they can enforce this open laws with our help. until that's done, you have an agreement that is incomplete and a sham. there's also one other enforcement mechanism. the

i also had lunch with the president of the afl-cio and a number of international union presidents.e are reaching out, trying to understand where people are at and building support for an agreement. crawled whenlesh some of the republicans came back from a meeting at the white house recently and said all they need is 30 democratic votes with the new nafta. no. in advancingerest something that leaves these questions unresolved. we have another partisan trade agreement that is narrowly approved with just a smattering of boats from one side or the other. i want to have a bipartisan coalition that can move forward. david: let's go to the second issue, which is labor. organized labor again. the new agreement, it would increase the wages for some mexican workers. that is a major step forward in terms of labor? rep. blumenauer: absolutely. the privation that had been -- the provision is a step forward. that is an example of trying to make sure the agreement is real. this has not yet been approved by the mexican congress. adjourn at theto end of this month. move, untilnk this the mexican co

the aftermath of that strike led to the creation of a little organization known as the afl -- cio. my father was a leader, a general of the social workers parties. my mother muriel was an opera singer in chicago in the 1930s. she was born february 26, 1920. she would have been 19 in 1939. in the past, we were, and still may be, the seventh largest investor in the afl/cio's housing investment fund. it is a smaller aspect of our portfolio, similar to our fixe fixed assets, where it might not get as much of a return as other areas, but it is important to invest in because it allows us to building housing for working people. one of my goals on the board in the upcoming two years is to expand that portfolio and look for opportunities to invest in housing for working people. will you join me on that? and what's your thoughts on expanding housing opportunities through our investment funds? >> absolutely. i mean, it is -- i'm looking at business models now that are using city-owned properties, common space, whatever, that are looking at that in the reality of what is happening in their communities, their states, the nation. and i've had a venture fund, and i still have some venture investments, and i've always said -- and this goes back a long time -- that there are great business models that do for the greater good, that create the greater good for the greatest amount of people,

"the wall street journal" james freeman, and a democratic strategist. what do you make of this? >> you have a number of progressive democrats trying to lurch as far left as possible with the green new deal. alexandria ocasio-cortezs and those folks running for president because they think it's this shiny object. then you have folks like richard trumka who are more -- bill de blasio is, it's not an out and out bandit would make it cost prohibitive to have steel and glass skyscrapers. people like cement finishers and an an international brotherhood of electrical workers. yes we need to care about the environment but we have to do it in a pragmatic matter. when you look at practical democrats, they put the brakes on because there's a recognition that if you l

chamber of commerce and the afl/cio. who likes crumbling bridges? no one. pot holes don't poll well. the issue is how do you pay for it? the white house and congressional leaders aren't yet at that point of this conversation. but there is a legitimate question. how do you pay for something that could have a price tag reaching toward $2 trillion. chuck schumer suggested rolling back the tax cut. republicans have slammed that. republicans call for more private money, more private investment, democrats call for more public, more federal money for these sorts of things. the two big questions here, how or whether the white house can work with congressional democrats who are actively investigating him, and whether either side, democrats or republicans, are in a mood to give the other side a victory on something like this given we're in the middle of an election year. this is why infrastructure week, all things infrastructure continues to be a running gag here on capitol hill and at the white house. people like to talk about it a lot, but people don't actually lik

organized labor believe it or not back in the day in the '70s, texas was a very strong, extremely strong afl-cio, particularly in houston. those white men supported her to the end. they were extremely important allies to her. from the time she was a senator through the time she was in congress. she was a very strong proponent of organized labor. and she was also very friendly with other texas politicians of course. no matter what their political strife, she always had a very good relationship with everyone. and she did committee politics really well. she was loyal to her chairs. she worked really well with committee chairs no matter who they were. so i think she had lots of different kinds of allies. >> once again, i don't have specific women, so let me give a shout-out to a couple of men who i think should be acknowledged. one is john f. kennedy. he does not go down in history as a big feminist. but he appointed the president's commission on the status of women. which brought together, well, eleanor roosevelt was the titular chair of that which was enormous prestige. esther peterson was the per
