well, we all hear a lot about unions coming back into t aflcio. and quite frankly tt's a personal priority of mine. but ultimately, it won't matter how many union are in the aflcio if we fail to capture the imagination of the millennium. now we aught to be clear. the problem isn't that they have some deep seated hatred. they don't. earlier this year teixeira did a study that points o that support for uon is higher among younger americans than it for any other age group. the problem is that they -- not that they dislike you, they think we do a lot of good things. we do a lot of good things for our members and oths. the problem is they don't think we have enough to offer them. that's not the way that it has toe. you see a few iears back there was other senator son. it was done by a friend. it found that young workers, ite collar workers who really didn't want much to do with the labor movement really sat up and took notice when they heard about unions winning protection for telecommunications and bargaining for affordable health care or standing up

talked about all of this to a very supportive crowd there, those labor folks love him, that's the aflcio in pittsburgh. cnn's ed henry is also there. some republican critics are saying that the president is overexposed. is he going to scale back at all or is he going to keep pushing forward? >> reporter: i see him really pushing forward, doing a lot more of these kind of events, he ended with a flourish there, sort of a mantra he used to use out on the road. especially to a very friendly crowd. orlg organized labor, this is the group that is pushing ahead health care. it was interesting how sober and sedate the president was yesterday on wall street talking about regulatory reform. today much more fired up, talking about how he's going to stand up for american workers, first at a gm plant in youngstown, ohio, now we're here in pittsburgh at the afl-cio convention, and these people certainly wanted to hear it. his message was, look, i inherited a mess. the president is taking a beating in some polls. when you talk to some white house aides, they say, look, the president inherited some of

in general, the aflcio was content. they did not really go after white-collar workers. i am not sure if they could have succeeded in getting those workers. despite the that callers interest in joining a union, for the most part you find white collar workers and not want to join unions because it is the status issue. in the 1990's, i was a programmer. i was just a general run-of-the- mill programmer. i thought i could do it on my own. i had skills. i did not need solidarity and support what you do for working- class people. then i found out that they could start firing us and replacing us with cheaper stuff. this was happening where i was living in austin, texas. other people saw this happening. they started talking about getting together. i went to a meeting independently of what i was doing. they were talking about doing something to fix this. but they would not talk about the word "union." they used the word "guild." they cannot wrap their heads around the idea of a union. in their mind, unions were for guys in detroit and the guys in the minds. they were not for the
