many of them were of african descent. there were a lot of afro mexican settlers in this part of mexico. what i have come to understand is this is a part of the afro mexican moving into these far regions away from the big cities to escape some of the racism that took place there. we know there were lots of free blacks in the colonial time when slavery was happening. those people went on to found towns and settle areas in these -- in this region. this is an interesting part of the equation. in terms of the pico family, we know that santiago delacruz was on that expedition. his wife maria, was there. she is listed in the books of the melodic -- mulatta a caste term that the spaniards used. this is supposed to signify somebody of african descent, who mary and their offering -- offspring would be blotto as well. -- mullata as well. they settled all the way up to the bay area. jose maria ego was pico's father. he was a soldier in the mission system. as you can imagine, there are very few occupations. there are farmworkers, sold
