apple's future in television? david: if you had asked me a year ago or nine months ago, i would have thought that they would be having to figure out their own version of a bundle. by now. a lot of people are rooting for them. emily: what happened? why didn't it work out? david: i think it is challenging to put the pieces together with the content owners. there were a lot of conversations going on about how and when. i can't comment on them. but apple is an incredibly innovative company and they make products that people want. there is enormous potential to crack the television world open. emily: in tv, could they end up being just a set top box? david: i think that is possible. they could also be a tv or a box next to the tv, there are a lot of different ways. emily: have you heard about -- david: the fight over the living room has not been decided yet. i don't think that has been decided yet. tv is a huge part of who controls the living room. who controls the electronics in the house? emily: what about the entertainment industry in general? where is it in five years? what are we watching? david: you will continue to

so i think at a high level, you know, apple is at 200 plus billion dollar company and, you know, five years agoout a quarter of the size. and so if the thinking was apple needed a great product every three years and the company is five times bigger it needs one or two great products every year if it's really going to sustain the same kind of pace of growth or impact on the marketplace. and so in light of that, i do think that apple's r&d level is organic investment, needs to be higher. it's dramatically lower than its large cap peers on percentage of revenue. if you look at the top 50 technology companies, apple is second lowest as a percentage of dollar spent on r&d over tim cook's tenure. on the acquisition side, similarly if you benchmark top technology companies spend about 25% of their cash flow on acquisitions. apple spent only about 2%. so if apple does need to bring more new products and more new services to marketplace, our belief is that both organic and inorganic investment are important. it doesn't mean apple has to run out and buy a huge company. but i think we've seen great compan

this tax case with apple dates back to decisions made 25 years ago, 1991, and 2007. is a historic deal. what it could mean for the tax arangsmentes currently is another suggestion. j.p. morgan said if it refers to current tax aranrangements it could be a hit. the follow through is very important on this. it is awkward for ireland and awkward for europe too. they want to attract u.s. multinationals and this sets up a far bigger battle. >> is what apple is doing unique to apple? they have 5500 people employed around the city of cork ireland. can you tell us a little more about what is at issue here and whether it's an issue that other companies face as well? >> reporter: well, it's a great question, sara. it's not only apple. remember, you've got companies like microsoft that are making heavy investment, alphabet, google, of course that are also investing in ireland. so for ireland, this is very awkward. they want to protect those relationships. if you look at what the commission has done historically, they've already ordered apple to pay money to italy as well. it's n

apple? roger: it's going to be difficult. five years agomany people were still getting their first smartphones and they were open to all kinds of applications. they would up trade every year or every two years. now you are at the point where the evolution of the product has slowed down dramatically so the need to upgrade his every three or four years. you are a manufacturer, you are past peak. you see this in europe and china. emily: samsung is out with a phone that unlocks based on scanning your eye. could we see more innovation? roger: i expect tons of innovation. what i don't expect is there's nothing obvious they can do that causes the install base to up date at once. thinked a big bulge, so i for apple and samsung, i think apple is interesting because the pe multiples are so far below the s&p 500, yet the cash flow is exceptionally favorable. of those things come you can own apple and not worry about the audit cycle and every once in a while, you get something where everything does lineup and they have a good period and the stock is up
