. >> and i'm peggy bunker in for jessica aguirre. the issue was over safety and also accusations that uber misled passengers regarding the quality of its driver background checks. nbc bay area's laura malpor from the news room with the story. laura this all started with a consumer protection lawsuit? >> that's right, peggy. this stems from a lawsuit filed by district attorneys in san francisco and l.a. back in 2014 claiming the ride service gave customers a fault sense of security by claiming its background checks were the toughest in the industry. prosecutors contended uber's practices are actually inferior it taxis because all taxi drivers are required to get fingerprint checks. but all uber drivers are not. in today's settlement, uber did not admit to any wrong doing but it did say it's already made some of the changes prosecutors wanted. the suit also questioned uber's compliance with california laws regarding airport laws and fare calculation. uber released an audio statement on today's settlement. here's part of it. >> we're gl

i'm peggy bunker in for jesse aguirre. >> and i'm roger mathai. >> police say a homeless man came at officers with a knife but witnesses are sharing a very different story. jean elle is in the mission district for us this evening. jean, two versions of the story. what are the protesters demanding? >> the protesters are demanding change. they came here to the scene of the shooting tonight, leaving a few candles and painting the ground red. they say they are demanding change and that the shooting didn't have to happen. an angry crowd marches through the mission, gathering where police shot and killed a homeless man they say had a knife. >> enough of them killing our people! enough of rogue cops. >> reporter: it followed a coalition meeting where dozens called for annd to police shootings. this happened on shotwell near 19th just before 10:00 this morning. the public health department said a homeless outreach teen encountered a homeless man acting erratically with a knife. officers on the radio said they fired bean bag rounds at the man and then fire guns when he lunched at them. >> the

. >> and i'm jessica aguirre. want to show you video here. the man in utah pulling a gun on a convenience store clerk. but he eluded police for over a year until investigators say the turned up in orinda and attacked a man at a party. nbc bay area's elyce kirschner, this news comes as city leaders are trying to meet to decide about banning online house rentals in that city. >> reporter: yeah, and jess, the meeting was prompted by the brutal beating that occurred in front of an online rental property. the suspect, we've learned, was also wanted in a violent home invasion and a robbery in utah. and it was all caught on camera. he calmly walks in, points his gun, and prepares to fire shots. this is surveillance video from december 2015 of falala maka shortly after he held a father and son at gunpoint during a home invasion in utah. >> fast forward to today we have a suspect in custody. >> reporter: authorities finally caught up with maka in san leandro last week after police say he nearly beat a fellow party goer to death outside a house party i

. >>> i'm jessica aguirre. it's that time of year where streets get hot and gang activity hotter. we've learned a special force of san jose crime fighters is gearing up to battle the gangs. damian trujillo is outside a permanent march yol put there against violence. >> reporter: jessica, in the last three years, by the end of the years at guadalupe church it's been filled with white crosses. they hope it stays like this, this year. gang experts know that might not be reality. they adorn the lawn of guadalupe parish, white crosses honoring the 14 people killed in san jose this year, including a man killed on lyndale avenue saturday night and another victim monday night near quimby road. >> it's a little hot out ther >> the gang prevention task force is gearing up for the busier summer months. they put boots on the ground once gang violence occurs to prevent retaliation. >> they were out on lyndale avenue saturday night. sources tell me a student at job corps was shot execution-style by a group of teens in a car. police have not classified that killing as gang-related. >> gang viole

i'm jessica aguirre. >> i'm roger matthai. this is happening not only on highway 4. but also on a surface street alongside the highway near pittsburgh high school. a car careening off the highway on to the avenue. this is not uncommon. we've seen a rash of freeway shootings. what do we know about this one? >> reporter: we know right now there are a lot of investigators here right my trying to figure out exactly what happened here. the car that ran off the freeway is still there. and the person who was shot is still inside. we do know this freeway shooting happened around 8:00. web state highway 4 was shut down around 9:00 so the chp could conduct their investigation. a car reportedly ran off the highway, through a fence and into the city limits on california street. police are keeping us a block away so they can do their investigation. police are trying to figure out what happened here and they are also trying to figure out who will head up the investigation, pittsburgh police or the chp. there have been a number of freeway shootings in contra costa county, ten on hi

i'm jessica aguirre. >> and i'm raj mathai. not just grief and shock but the question, why? what drove the brothers, one a minor, the other shown here in shackles, to allegedly kill their parents? nbc bay area's ian cole has the revealing court documents, and ian, the police say the brothers actually changed their story here. >> yeah. and raj, you can see a lot of it in the documents. in those documents that were released to reporters today, several key things. the brothers both admit to being there at the time of the killings. one says that he pulled the trigger. but it's what they did after that continues to puzzle investigators. the two brothers, captured and in court today. the older brother, hasib golamrabbi, sat shielded by his attorney. the younger brother, 17-year-old omar, was arraigned in the hallway away from cameras. he'll be tried as an adult. >> golam and shamima rabbi were murdered inside their home by their two sons on saturday april 23rd. >> reporter: the d.a.'s office says the father was shot more than 12 times. the mother once in the head. court documents
