nbc bay area's jessica aguirre is in rio. our crews tracked down a man who tells a much different story. >> he says he intervened to help lochte, conger, bents and feigen. he said he tried to explain to them that the owner wanted them to pay for the damage they did in the bathroom. fernandez said a security guard pulled out a gun and pointed it to the ground to stop the swimmers from running away, but he never pointed it at lochte. >> no, no, no police. >> reporter: to pay for the damage, fernando said the athletes handed him money and he gave the money to the security guard. then the swimmers left in a cab. ryan lochte sat down with matt lauer to try once again to explain what happened. >> i mean, there was a gun pointed in our direction. we were all frightened. and we wanted to get out of there as quick as possible. the only way we knew, this guy is saying, you have to give him money. >> but when pressed, lochte called his behavior and admitted changing his story. >> that's why i'm taking full responsibility for it. because

. >> nbc bay area anchor jessica aguirre joining us live right now. first, jess, a couple stories developing. the weather and some scary moments for several reporters in rio. >> reporter: yeah, this morn very soggy here. windy, rainy, and cold. the people coming in to the park, olympic park, are coming in all hooded up with umbrellas and their hood covered and so some of the events so far canceled. rowing is what we know of the morning session still unclear if anything else is going to be canceled and whether the afternoon session will be canceled. there is a cloud hanging over the olympic park today. because of that incident you referred to that happened on a media transport shuttle bus. let's show you what it looked like. there were reporters moving from one venue d odoro stadium to the broadcast center in olympic park when the bus, the glass shattered. it was hit by something. there are some reports it may have been gunfire. other reports it was just rocks. either way, that media transport bus did suffer some sort of an attack on it. reporters had

. >> nbc bay area jessica aguirre is live with what is on tap today. first, jess, a dangerous situation unraveling for several u.s. swimmers. >> reporter: certainly. not the kind of publicity the ioc was talking about. swimming sensation ryan lochte and three other team usa members who were robbed. lochte and the swimmers were coming back from a party at the hospitality house of france in a taxi when they were stopped by men who appeared to be police officers. it turned out they were armed gunmen who robbed the three swimmers including lochte, and told them to get on the ground. >> i was like -- so i'm not getting down on the ground. and the guy, pulled out his gun, cocked it, put it to my forehead and i was like whatever. he took our money, took my wallet. >> now luckily no one was injured, but it could have been much, much worse. there have been some incidents of petty thievery here at the rio games, but certainly this is the most high-profile incident. nathan adrian is happy that everyone is safe. trust me, so is everyone here at the rio olympics. >

jessica aguirre, who is it going to be, jess? reporter: well, peggy and terry, remember, we're going from the best swimmer in the world to the best gymnast in the world. michael phelps carried the american flag into the opening ceremony at maracana stadium. today we learned simone biles will be carrying it into maracana stadium again, but this time for the closing ceremony. it will be the first u.s. gymnast, the second actually u.s. gymnast to carry the american flag in either the opening or closing ceremony. the last time that happened was 1936. biles saying she's very honored and privileged to do it. we'll get to see that tomorrow night. it's going to be very, very exciting. the one thing i'm curious about, as you look at the video, that's a really big, long pole. michael phelps is a really tall man. simone biles is smaller. she's strong but maybe they'll truncate that pole for her a little bit. >> that is a good point. >> hope the wind doesn't kick up and blow her away. >> reporter: she's little but mighty. >> thanks, jessica.

jessica aguirre joins us from rio. what a great story for this san francisco family. >> reporter: oh, my god. it was so exciting today. it was really a heart thumping day, raj and janelle, for fans of u.s. men's team foil and for fans of alex massialas and gerek meinhardt. so moving today because they were up, they were down and then finally they were on that podium. that's what happened, the squad started out strong this morning with a win against egypt and their chances at gold looked great. but then the second bout against russia proved much more difficult with massialas struggling. the squad suffered a loss in the semifinal round to russia knocking them out of contention for that gold medal, but the bronze was still in sight. they came back strong in the next bout defeating olympic champions italy to take the bronze medal. as you said, the first medal for the u.s. in team foil since 1932. i spoke to alex literally as he was walking off the piste, that's the strip where they compete. he told me they could not have p

here is our own jessica aguirre from rio. jessica?e, it is not surprising. even though rio is known for its beaches, copacabana being the most famous, lately they have garnered a lot of attention over the issue of contamination, and whether athletes going into the water will be safe. ♪ >> reporter: they are the very soul of brazilian life. sun kissed sand playgrounds that stretch across 23 beaches in rio for 45 miles. a year-round mecca for care oio and people alive. jennifer came to copacabana to see the famed beaches for herself. and they did not disappoint. the california beach girl was surprised to find how pristine this paradise appears. >> i never thought it would be this beautiful and how clean the water is there. is no rocks like in los angeles. so i'm amazed at how pretty. it's not that dirty compared to santa monica. >> reporter: the famous beaches of copacabana and ipanema are certainly sexy and beautiful. but they're also dirty and potentially dangerous. scientists have found a drug-resistant super bacteria in the water in

let's turn to jessica aguirre live at olympic park. you caught up with the east bay native after the final. >> yes, janell, raj, i did. this is the part where you plug your ears. kristin ipson is beloved in the east bay. he has been a stand out the whole time, he was a stand out at high school, he graduated from stanford, he got a bronze in 2012 in synchronized diving. he came to rio to give it a gold and see if he could medal in the men's three meter spring board. that didn't happen tonight, but i have to tell you that the 24-year-old is as gracious in victory as he is in loss. he talked to us the minute he walked off that platform. >> this is by far more competitive than the relaymen's final but i knew it was going to be. that's why i decided to change and go to a higher difficulty dive, and i'm happy i did. it wasn't enough to get a medal but i'm still happy. >> reporter: there was a definite roar in the crowd when you did the dive, and the audience was not happy with the score that you got, the team usa folks. you came out smiling,

. >> nbc bay area anchor jessica aguirre is tracking the story from rio. and, jess, the truth is kind of evident in that surveillance video. >> well, that surveillance video certainly very telling, kris and sam. and it's what brazilian authorities here really wanted to get out because the one thing they didn't want was this stain on them that brazil is a dangerous country. they've had a few mishaps and obviously there has been some crime issues here. but that is not what they wanted out there today. so american swimmer jimmy feigen will be headed back to the u.s. he made a court appearance this morning in a brazilian courtroom before a judge. feigen reached a deal with brazilian police, agreeing to pay $11,000 to a local charity. feigen will be getting his passport back after it was seized wednesday and kept from leaving rio. as you said, it stems from that alleged robbery with teammates gunnar bentz , jack conger and ryan lochte. lochte initially told if press he was robbed at gun point. brazilian police found the su surveillance video and showed that the
