how unusual was it for bernie sanders to skip aipac? >> reporter: it's pretty unusual, particularly because he's the only one of the five remaining candidates to do so but it's not all that unusual given the fact that his politics are so progressive. the politics of this organization have moved to the right every year we've seen these events and covered these events. so quite simply for bernie sanders, his advisers tell me that it was smarter politically for him just to talk to the voters out here in the west in those key primaries tomorrow. he addressed some 7,000 people in boise, idaho, so that at least in the short term will do him more good. he is going to be giving a policy speech a foreign policy address in an hour's time in salt lake city. the same speech will be handed out to members of aipac. he volunteered to give a speech by video, but the organizers of this event said they were not accepting video speeches. he either had to come in person or not give a speech at all. >> so jeff talk to me about the states voting tomorrow for

>> this is my 20th day aipac conference. trump came in saying he wanted to be neutral between the arabs and israelis. he acted like he never said it. he didn't even try to laugh it off. so i think that part of his -- that lack in his speech is very loud. on the other hand, trump is a tremendous stadium performer. and it's hard to speak to 20,000 people. just in terms of energy and loud voice, trump was able to make up for perhaps in style what he lacked in substance. >> what did you think of his authenticity? >> well, he got caught just as he was saying what a tremendous evangelical he was, and quoted 2 corinthians. saying how strong he was for israel vis-a-vis palestine. well, palestine isn't a country. we all look forward to a two-state solution. but making it a country is a concession israel will make when other concessions are made on the other side. just as the kurdish people don't have a state. you can't talk about the republic of kurdistan. i think that for a lot of people in this room, talking about palestine as if i

and the aipac conference. we have donald trump set to make his address at that conference coming up in the next hour. and outside, there is a small coordination of protesters, including this man. it's rabbi david passkin and he's leading an effort for a backout during donald trump's speech tonight and he joins me now from washington. rabbi, thank you for being here. you said in an interview last week, there are more than 900 leaders in this protest movement and you said there could be upwards of a thousand who walk out of that auditorium. so, in the next hour, when mr. trump takes that stage, is that what you anticipate, about a thousand people walking out? >> i think it's going to be very difficult to say, thomas. it's -- many of our people are going to be walking out. others are simply not going to be showing up. so it's very difficult to point people who don't show up. so i think what you're going to see is hundreds of people today and for the rest of this campaign, saying no to hatred. and not accepting th

and of course, aipac is very much in that corner, generally speaking. the people who are known as neocons were all with w., almost all -- in fact an all of them that i know of supported the iraq war. well, today the war in iraq is in a bit of shambles, politically. you don't find a lot of republicans say it was a great decision by w. to go into that country and invade it and get rid of the iraqi military and do all the debathification and all that stuff. and so that's really changed from, say, eight years ago, when the republican party was a hawk party. within thing that's so true today, brian, and that's these two meetings make a lot of sense. the establishment in the republican party is hawkish. that may seem ironic, because they don't generally seem as ideological, the east coast people, but they're all hawkish. so in a way he's appealing to the republican establishment as well as the pro-israeli community tonight. >> chris, because you've spoken and written so much about john f. kennedy, i know that you were highly interested in this day as kind of

the aipac conference. why aipac? we know the acronym stands for american israel public affairs committee but for listeners and viewers, what's the significance of this conference? >> reporter: we're at the verizon center where this conference is going on. and it is, of course, for the pro-israel lobby and the big speeches today are one part of what happens here when you have thousands of attendees who come together for a variety of different sessions and meetings, talking about all kinds of different policy issues that affect the relationship between the u.s. and israel. and sort of the big marquee events today include the four or five presidential candidates, bernie sanders choosing to stay out west where he's campaigning and deliver a foreign policy speech instead of coming back here to do it in person. for john kasich and ted cruz, since katy talked a lot about donald trump, i'll fill you in on those two. for kasich, expect him to talk about something that in many ways has not been as popular in this election year

i want to try to explain to people the power of aipac. it's not so much the organization itself and that you can endorse people in different ways, but people tell me if you get an endorsement of aipac, you find yourself with friends you never knew you had. people will say, can i have a fund raiser for you, help you out in certain ways. it creates a whole support for your -- now it's being challenged by a moderate group to its left. but less hawkish certainly. i don't know, the n rks a, aipac, washington, d.c., those two groups really get your attention if you're politician of either party. joy, i was here paying tribute to the oratory of john kasich, a guy we normally think of as a jimmy stewart, awe shucks. and all of a sudden he's a barn burner. >> a lot of people forget that governor kasich has a media background. he's actually a quite good presenter. >> did you watch it? >> i did actually remember seeing it a couple of times. very conservative guy. he comes across as a moderate in this race because of obviously the contrast of people

donald trump spoke moments ago at aipac ahead of ted cruz. ambassador orren, at times these speeches are competitive. ted cruz says the difference is everyone says they'll move the embassy to jerusalem and i will do it. who gave the better speech? >> reporter: i have to say they all gave outstandingly pro-israel speeches. in israel, i'm the person who has to explain what's going on behind us and it's been difficult for me. they keep on asking in israel what are donald trump's policies. i have to say the three hardest words any politician can say is i don't know. tonight, he gave his first presidential speech on issues relating to israel and the middle east. he was unequivocal in all positions. as someone who represents israel abroad, he basically gave all the talking points, whether it be moving the embassy from tel aviv to jerusalem to holding the palestinians accountable for terror. everything. it makes my job easier. it probably makes republicans jobs harder because now they have a candidate who comes out very specifically on policy issues
