troops right after the first air combat, because all the control and command over the combat of the air will be conducted by our pilots in the russian language. so here, they realized the tell. like in poker. their communication would be in the russian language, and it would be detected by the united states. and this was in september of 1950, before the soviets and stalin made the decision to send pilots, which is something they did in november. and funny enough this language , issue is one of the funnier anecdotes that came out of all of this research. after the end of the cold war, americans tried to find soviet veterans of the korean war and interview them. one of them indicated their instructions were to speak in chinese while they were flying these combat missions, and it was dangerously unrealistic. "it worked until the first real fight in the air, when we forgot not only our chinese commands but russian words, too." except for dirty language. those people that brought the airplanes up here were all part of the air transport command.they got here, they got on a transport plane and taken right back to montana to pick up more airplanes because at 250 airplanes to 300 airplanes a month, they had to keep that flow going. so when they got here, they were turned over to the russians. the russians service them with cold weather oil and hydraulic fluids, they test flew the airplanes to make sure they were airworthy, and then they left. and how that helped win world war ii? well, almost 8000 airplanes were used by the russians to put eastern air pressure on the nazi forces and relieve some of the pressure of the u.s. and its allies approaching from the west. well, the program was called land lease, and there were millions of rolling stock and other kinds of materials, as well as airplanes, that were given to the u.s. to its allies in europe and its ally in russia. i personally think it was a misnomer. none of that equipment ever came back. and nobody ever paid a spirit. the value on -- and nobody paid us for it. the value
