- air drag. - air drag. they drag their feet in the air. here's a satellite, i mean i say that not literally. here's satellite plowing through, okay? now it's way, way up there, maybe a couple of hundred miles high, no air drag. but maybe sometimes it's in kinda low orbit. up here not too much drag but down here, you know what happened to the-- what was it? - skylab. - the skylab? skylab back in the 70s, it was in an elliptical orbit, okay, going around, around, around and what happened is there was a lot of solar activity and the atmosphere little bit deeper at times, and they thought, yeah, and this come in and hits a little bit of atmosphere. slows down a tiny, tiny bit, but once it slows down that means it's not gonna go so high next throw, huh? then it comes down, slow down a little bit more. next time up to here and so the orbit decays, because it drags its feet as it comes by and keeps decaying, decaying, decaying and then phoom, splasharoony. if you're going about 20,000 miles per hour and hit the air, guess what happens to you? oka

so they cut through less air drag as they move. isn't that nice? see? and usually, you're gonna get about 25% efficiency, which means you'll get 25% of this. okay? which means you usually get about 10 kilometers per liter. see? yeah. yeah. so what you're trying to do is to increase the efficiency. but this is in the upper limit. see? now, most people don't realize this. people don't know there's an upper limit, that nature's limit. and they think that little gadgets or something can how-- somehow beat this. and many of the devices that are submitted to the patent office float this all together. and the first thing that patent types do with some particular machine, they say, "wait a minute, is it gonna violate "the conservation of energy? if it does, we don't wanna look at it." and e reason is, the patent people have looked through thousands and thousands and thousands of scheme, maybe hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of schemes, which all seem to give you out more energy than before and they find out where the little flaw is. so at this point, they ju

air. and so sea spray is a very efficient heat-transfer mechanism. now, those spray drops are also slowing the atmosphere down. they're exerting a drag on the winds. the physics of that is very complicated. very complicated. and we don't understand it. and we're trying to understand those physics. we're trying to carefully measure the friction and the heat transfer of the spray. so we flew airplanes into hurricanes over the atlantic to make measurements to help us understand how sea spray affects this heat-transfer and momentum-transfer process. and when we start to better understand this process, we can, with any luck, make better forecasts of how hurricanes will evolve. narrator: but overflights are limited in the data they can provide so emanuel also studies hurricane machines to get a closeup view of what may be happening when the atmosphere and the ocean interact. dr. emanuel: so we have built a laboratory apparatus in which we can simulate these very fantastic conditions -- very high wind speeds, air blowing across water the air is filled with spray. when the winds start to blow more than about 80 or 90 miles per hour so much spray is lofted
