air force and the u.s. army and tremendous value from that program and i think as we talked one of the things that has come out of that is the additional force from the nato countries and where we have partnered the national guardsmen army and air to fill out the shortfalls in other countries especially in the balkans and some of the other countries that wanted to deploy by providing that additional skills that we have partnered and provide additional forces. for a very small amount of money it's been a tremendous program and the map 64 countries today. we had one partnership in the northern command that we've worked with and that is what rhode island and the bahamas, and the partnerships and relationships we built and many of our captains and majors will grow up to be colonels and generals and the national guard, and their partners will do the same so that relationship we celebrated the 20 of anniversary will endure so it is definitely money well spent. senator, one thing i think we have to look at very clo

air force? what are you doing to deepen the coordination, training with the folks out in that region but also fundamentally change your equipment mix? >> i think clearly the rebalance to asia for us has meant the absence of reduction. in other words, as we get smaller as an air force, others should note that we have not taken reductions in the standing force in the pacific area, in the pacific commander area of responsibility. that is the reflection of the priority we are assigning to that undertaking. clearly we have a number of long-term allies. obviously the republic of career, our japanese air self- defense force counterparts, the australians and so on. these are very close relationships, very important. and others, thailand, developing activities with indonesia and others. the point is part of this is structure. part of this is a network of relationships with like minded aviators and air forces. and we will continue to pursue that. clearly there's also a place for navy and air force collabo

there you see at andrews air force base just outside of d.c., air force one ready to go, just waiting for the president's arrival. what more can you tell us about the travel, the plans for the president. >> reporter: good afternoon, fredricka. the president is scheduled to leave the white house here in just about 15 minutes. he is expected to touch down at buckley air force base in aurora, colorado, just before 4:00 p.m. local time. so 6:00 p.m. our time here on the east coast. he expects to spend about two hours there on the ground. he'll be meeting with families of the victims of friday's shootingas well as local officials. we expect those meetings to take place privately behind closed doors. but it's not uncommon at events like this to see the president at some point appear on camera, perhaps make a statement to the press. as you know, he was just in colorado at the end of june to tour the damage in and around colorado springs. he certainly spoke to the press then. we'll be keeping an eye out on that but he just plans to spend just over two hours there on the ground helping comfort

one other issue i'd like to raise is the air force -- and we're not at war with the air force, by the way, but we have some differences. the air force determined to take away aviation assets from the air national guard in our states, and we heard from all of our governors, we heard from all of the tags, the generals, that this would really be crippling to the air national guard and the air national guard if those assets were lost. so we recommended to the air force we provided $850 million to do what we call a pause, to let's get together and let's work with the states, let's work with the governors, let's work with the generals to see what is the right thing to do here and not deny the states the assets that they need, the aviation assets that they need. there's so much more to this bill. the bill has been available online. the copies of the bill have been available. the lists of all of the issues have been isolated in press releases so the actual contents of the bill have been available for weeks, and so at this point i am not going to go further into the bill but i will reserve the
