the intent is to align the air activity with the ground activity. while the ground forces are trained and equip the air campaign is intended to delay degrade, slow isil from achieving their objectives, and make it tougher for them to finance, try and disrupt their movement of resources and people. to do all those things so by the time the ground force is ready to move the air campaign will shift to supporting the ground forces. >> rose: you have to have both in significant ways? >> if we're going to control in-state, on the ground, inside iraq and syria -- >> to control territory you have to have boots on the ground. >> if you want to control territory over time, there need to be boots on the ground. >> rose: is the target in syria just terrorist groups like isil or al-nusra. in so way is it the syrian air force and army? >> we are not targeting the syrian air force and army right now. >> rose: what does the air force do in cyber-security? >> quite a bit actually. we have a number of airmen who had been at this for quite some time supporting the national security agency an

the kc-46 is a new tanker that the air force is introducing. it has had development problems and it's not ready for primetime. general welsh of the air force confirmed that this tanker, the new tanker was not intended to replace the kc-10 but that it's at risk of being replaced due to budget cuts. and he's confirmed that it would cost more in the midterm to replace the kc-10. just to put the capabilities difference in perspective, the kc-10 can carry 350,000 pounds of fuel. the other tankers, the older kc-46 or the kc-135 and the new kc-46 can only carry 200,000. 200,000 versus 350,000. the kc-10 carries double the pay load, carries more passengers, the long and the short is that this tanker is essential for our ability to project force. and in this world of increased global threats, we cannot afford to deteriorate our capabilities. the answer i believe is to prohibit the early retirement of the kc-10 tanker. we did that in the national defense authorization act. there's no provision in the budget to replace the kc-10 and i'm simply looking to

i interviewed the former chief the commander of the israeli air force, moti hod, and said to me that ane in the air is the most devastating combat tool but on the ground it's completely defenseless, and it was true. they developed special bombs called durendals that penetrated the runways with a retro rocket and blew up huge holes. some of them were on delays too so the egyptians never knew when they were going to blow up and they weren't prepared when they blew up. so once the runways were destroyed, all of these egyptian planes, soviet supply planes migs, tupolevs, were trapped. they were sitting in docks quite literally and then the israeli planes, mostly using canons and rocket fire not bombs, destroyed these planes one after another. the egyptians had never bothered to put them under canopies concrete canopies. they were all out on the runways completely exposed. so within about two hours, israel had destroyed well over 300 planes, so it was the largest single aviation victory in military history. c-span: how many planes did egypt have? >> guest: about 400. they ultimately lost a

that's how the women's air force service pilots were founded. of course, jackie cochran was named the commander of the wasps. it created a lot of jobs on the home front for women -- there were women mechanics, women pilots. they were trained in a military style, but they were not an official part of the military. it was not until the 1990's that they were granted veterans benefits. jackie surrounded by a lot of her lost pilots. after the war, jackie cochran became a big proponent of an independent air force, which, of course, came about in 1947. she continued to fly. she wanted to be the first pilot -- first woman pilot to fly supersonically, so who better to teach her than the first pilot to fly supersonically, general chuck yeager? she became the first woman to fly twice the speed of sound again with chuck yeager flying the chase plane. at the time of her death, jackie cochran held more aviation records than any pilot -- man or woman -- in history. you can make a pretty great case jackie cochran may have been the greatest pilot of all time. ji

with information about mismanagement base mortuary, the air force mortuary. actually, the mortuary for our country where we bring home the remains of our fallen heroes. my office was able to draw attention to both of these issues. the retaliation that the whistle-blowers were facing. at the end of the day, the office of special council and their investigation led to disciplinary action not against the whistle-blowers but against several people in leadership positions at the base within the mortuary itself, their top officer at the mortuary, to the reinstatement of whistle-blowers and others there. i was struck by the courage of these brave whistle-blowers. to be honest with you i was also , struck by the good work done by the office of special counsel, whose responsibilities include looking out for the whistle-blowers, making sure they get a fair shake as well as the taxpayers. this committee as a whole also has a strong history of working with individual whistle-blowers to root out waste, fraud, and abuse. for example, in our last congress, testimony from wh
