air force. want toharvey, if you tell us a little bit about yourself. what do you want the people to know about your service and about your time flying combat airplanes and then becoming a top gun? >> >> oh, boy. jerry: i know it is a long list. >> i never made any model aircraft or anything like that. never did anything as far as aircraft goes. i lived in a small town in northeastern pennsylvania. you can imagine how big that is. i was standing in my front yard one day and i saw this flight of p-40's fly over information. i said, i'd like to do that and that was it. so, i got into the military. i was drafted. i tried to enlist in the army air corps in january of 1943. they said they were not taking enlistments at the time. the reason they do not, they said that is because they do not want me in the army air corps. so, i was drafted in march of 1943. so, i was, went to fort meade maryland. took my written exam, my physical, heady uniform issued. -- had a uniform issued. went to jefferson barracks, missouri, for basic training. finished my basic training

if he joined the air force for glory and undoubtedly got what he wanted a national hero in his native india the wing commander now also has a whole gallery devoted to him in pakistan they clearly for different reasons the indian pilot made international headlines after he was shot down in a dogfight and captured by the pakistani military during a major standoff with india earlier this year. now the pilot's uniform as well as others seized personal belongings are on show at the pakistan air force museum in karachi. it's an unashamed tribute to what curators and visitors serious prefer of pakistani military might and it's leaving school children and students with their eyes the glow. that everybody always gives if we all of his belongings were confiscated and they're now on display here at the museum it felt very good today to see all these articles on display we are proud of the pakistan af course. the exhibition also features debris of the downed indian fighter jet a reminder that the incident at the heart of it was serious following a suicide attack in indian kashmir india and pakist

army, specifically army air forces. seventeen and a bunch of others shoot aerial combat sequences for training purposes, documentary films, tell them it ended up in the original film, some ended up in clark gable's film which most people have never seen. if you google clark gable and b-17, you can watch it online. it's a brilliant documentary he made. he is a gunner on several missions. so i thought okay, he's an interesting guy. let me track down him, he's not in his late 70s and nate idolizes and truly loves his stepfather and when i contacted him california, if you have anything to show me, i would love to see it. i said i have a whole footlocker full of stuff. he said i am that. so i flew out there and sure enough, he had this all out on the table to his garage and it was photographs and metals and uniforms and letters and friends and relatives and all that. what really caught my on was a simple black leather bullet in one joe had been carrying on the day he died in 1978. i sent you mind if i look through this? i sa

my wings at laughlin air force base. then i went through fighter school out at dallas, learned how to fly under the aces of the korean war. i graduated, and my first initial assignment was to myrtle beach 354, which was commanded by a double ace. an ace in korea as well as in world war ii. and he was what i would say an inspirational leader. he used to travel around. he had a colored jeep, he would travel around to various locations on the base indicating his very presence. they would say he is here, he is there, all the way down the line. basically he made all of these , people part of the greek team on the 354. with the vagaries of military orders, i got assigned to a k55 korea. well, i lost my love affair with the hun. this really established the love affair with the saber. a marvelous, marvelous fighter aircraft. we flew down on the taiwan straits. top cover during a period of time when nationalists would resupply the islands. i served as air controller with the seventh infantry. and returning to the states, i electe

he was an air force medic. in april of 1975, donald rumsfeld and gerald ford decided to evacuate all the orphanages in saigon ahead of the north vietnamese army, they called it operation baby lift. sergeant johnson volunteered for that mission and on april 5th, 1975, as the guns of the north vietnamese could be heard, he boarded a c-5 with 178 vietnamese orphans. the c-5 did not make it to the end of the runway at the air base. 138 children lost their lives and 11 airmen. one of them was master sergeant denning johnson. this year 44 years later, i accompanied my classmate denise, to panel 1-w of the vietnam wall where she was able to touch the name of her father, one of the last from that conflict, and if you look just under his name, on that same panel is the name of one of the eight women officers of the united states air force, nurses and doctors, who lost their lives in vietnam. captain mary therese clinker, who was on that plane when sergeant johnson went down is the name right below his. so next week, we
