so i went to flight school with the air force through an expedited program and went back into theater in august of '72 flying a reconnaissance f-force and stayed in until '77 and then ended up joining the air national guard after that and making a career out of the air national guard. subsequent to that, we went to desert storm in 1990. my unit got called up. we did that. we won that war, rah, rah, rah, and then retired in '92. a buddy of mine called me back on active duty in 2005, and i went back, boots on the ground, in iraq. i was 55 years old. my girlfriend was having a pagan baby. she said, you're going back? she believes in reincarnation. she said you are probably one of the people that were in cesar's army, you don't realize it. i didn't even think twice about when the guy calls me up and says, clyde, i need you to go back to iraq in '05 to help do some stuff. i said, no problem. i didn't even think about it. it's sort of like in your blood and i don't have any real fear of getting shot because i've been shot already. and combat is -- doesn't -- it's just -- i don't really have

air force r.o.t.c. your junior and senior year, you would be on contract and then you would be a pilot when you graduate. absolutely, that's what i wanted, and i went across campus and changed my major from medical to history. i wasn't very disciplined with academics. i was probably a.d.d. and didn't know it because i just couldn't sit down and study very long. fortunately, from my upbringing and having a good memory of hearing things and seeing things, i was able to get through the university of georgia in four years, which now is not the norm, by the way. they string it out because they're having a good time. they go five and six years. but i was working my way through school so i had to get through and get out. three days after i graduated and finished university of georgia, i entered flight school in valdosta, georgia at moody air force base. you probably can imagine after hearing my story how thrilling that was and how excited i was, where a lot of guys who were very concerned this was going to be

so kyle boots for say was a an ace in the korean war and very famous in the air force. he wrote a little manual call. no guts no glory for air-to-air combat, and he was a great pilot and i actually flew with him a good bed and we were friends there and i met him right after i came back home. he was a two-star general then so my airplane blew up seventh and november 1967 over enemy territory over. the gunners that we've been bombing and i knew i had to eject so i immediately. we were going to die in two seconds. we're going to hit the ground and so i pull that handle to eject and so did my front seat right after i did. and it's all automatic when you pull that handle it automatically blows the canopy it automatically this projectile explosion that occurs under the seat by the gas tubes that run out below the canopy and then project your seat. with you in it about 60 feet in the air to get away from the tail and the away in the airplane and then automatically it demands the separator activates and it throws you out of the seat and the seat goes one way and the pilot goes t
