i knew he'd been in the air force. it was an old uniform in, the basement, a couple of other little points around the house. that's it. he always said, i will tell war stories or you're not to get any war story out of me. so about six years ago, he'd been living at home until was about 94 at macular degeneration. it was getting a little dicey to happen, you know, around the house, even with some help and so he went off to a home, a veteran's home. it turned out we were starting to clean up the house the only house our family had ever lived in. needless to say, there was a lot of stuff in it. i think i see everybody nodding their head. got that just layers of memories and and time and just the too muchness of every little thing. so cleaning up one day in a small drawer with his cufflinks and tie clips, i found some small pocket sized notebook pages folded over, tossed, sitting there as they had for almost 65 years. no idea what this was. i picked it up. it was a diary it was an account of each bomber mission he had flow

so the russian air force did not perform the way i thought they were going to perform. and that's because again, the ukrainians, the ukrainian air defense was extraordinarily effective against the russian air force and they shot down the russian airplanes in the initial part of the fight. and so the russians, all the russians have done now is use their air force from russian airspace, launching long range precision missiles into ukraine. so that was, that was one, the other one that really surprised me was the ineffective use of russian electronic warfare. i thought that was going to be a much bigger factor than it proved to be. and i still am not 100% sure why they didn't shut down all the command and control networks that the ukrainians were using. some people have suggested because they're using the same frequency levels, same radio types, that sort of thing. i don't know. i'm not sure even today, what the full reason is, but the russian, the full capability of russian electronic warfare, i don't think was brought to bear and there were some other big lessons learned
