when you're talking about the allied air forces, by 1944, this is your daddy's air force. i mean, it is it is one of the largest air armadas ever assembled in the history of humankind. and i'm curious what your your first exposure to the battle of the bulge was. now, chances are it comes from one of two places, denng on your generation. there is 1965, henry fonda's battlef e bulge. and then there is 00nd one's band of brothers, or, as my kids call it, that movie with the jiy fallon cameo. bullet blinking. you'll miss it now. now, neither of these films rely heavily on and not their purpose. what air power in the battle of the bulge now give a point to band of brothers. they do show aerial resupply fly and we are going to talk about that here in a few minutes. and i think if you miss what allied air power does during bulge, you miss a very important component of that. that particular campaign. now, again, not to take from bastogne, not to take away from the infantry or the armor, but to fully understand in the battle you have to add that that air component into it. so i thin

air force, and they say that the air force needs to invest more heavily on next generation air dominance in g.a.d., for those who aren't familiar with this, it's come prized mainly of manned aircraft, but what they're saying is that military leadership is stalling this and kind of slow rolling it. they say that there are concerns over costs, over necessity. what is your response to them? >> this goes to the point that was just asked about. so engad is what we were just talking about, which is a family of systems. what i believe they're referring to is one piece of the system, the penetrating counter air crude platform. some would say it's a follow on to the f-22. that's the next generation. it is part of a family of systems that includes collaborative combat aircraft, which are uncrewed, but we have already gone from five down to two venn fors. we should have 150 of those in the inventory by the end of this next five years. so that -- plus all of the government reference architecture, which is one of those things that doesn't sound very interesting, but it helps us adapt and upgrade fast

and i go army, but it was army and air force for the choices. and my my little brain said, walk the war or walk or flight. so i said, i'll fly to war. and i joined the air force rotc, knowing that i had go through it, but i didn't have to commit any military service. it was just part of what you and. and then i got to love the instructors in air force rotc. i just fell in love with the whole idea. actually, of the military through my four years there and in school and got commission when i left and went right to pilot training. but it was a security route. it was never planned that was there was never any of my plans to do that. it was sort of a surprise and i made a choice and 40 years later, the air force kicked me out when they said i have an attraction for aviation. you to go there was the aviation was a true place to sit at the end of the runway. there was a naval reserve station in kansas city and they had the faa fighter reserve unit there. and used to go out and sit at the end of the runway and watch them land. and that was i just though

no secretary of the air force should ever have to admit that. >> the department of the space force, yet is the right word. it becomes a question of timing and the space policy directive in the trump administration did include a line that that should be something that is continually studied and when the conditions are right the secretary of defense should look to make that recommendation forward. i don't have a strong opinion on it being now. i think there is going to be a time in our lives people are living and working in space. we have the international space station but i mean beyond that. as we get towards that, can't imagine the role of the space force needing to expand even more. the last thing i would mention when we do look at the space force and what it does need to be building up and focusing on is that second mission congressman rogers mentioned when he said really the space force has two mentions, one is to enable a joint force which is critically important and that was a mission that came over from the air force and the second one is to protect and defend our interests in th

well, the way we have done it, because we have developed capabilities within our air force in pieces. if you want to know about the next fighters, go to langley. what about air mobility? long-range strike, go to barksdale. those cavities come to our air force in those pieces. the first iteration they get from that part of the air force's yes, looks good, so they might start investing but by the time it aggregates to the enterprise it might not make the cut. that happens way too often and when that happens, that's why it seems so hard to work with our air force and military. so by taking all that expertise that is diffused across our air force and putting it together into one innovative capabilities command that has one forced design. and maybe the opportunities that weren't there before. having that now when those innovative companies come and have their precious irad dollars, they can understand the real likelihood of those turning into a program of record because we can give the entire picture rather than pieces. being able to transition our air force from one that was a platform ce

it is a mission that came over from the air force. the second is to protect and defend our interest in space. that is going to be even more of a set of capabilities doctoring training, readiness that the space force needs to embrace. and developed. >> that brings up one of the questions here from the audience when are we going to shift our focus more to being willing to talk about offense if space, counter space capabilities. i think that we are seeing a little bit and some of the, you know, vision documents coming out of the space force more recently. but general salzman talked about counterspace campaigning. actually doing this stuff and peace time. showing others that we can hold their space asset at risk. we are not seeing that yet. not openly. if your adversary does not know about it does not do a lot to deter him if they don't know what we are capable of doing. do you see movement in that area that may be we will actually become a little bit more open about the ability to hold other nations space assets at risk? >> a salt typhoon

the bulk of guardians coming out of the air force we were dependent heavily on an air force to do a lot of training education and rapidly in five years shifted away from that. that's a perfect example where we are focused on space training, space education. to other surfaces, professional military education, may be a little space if we are lucky and learning about the other domain. we are educating guardians on space. we revised our officer training course, when you come and as an officer you are going to an operational assignment. we believe our acquisition community will be better if they understand firsthand the operational environment before they develop capabilities for it. likewise we will start to blur what it means to be a space operator. he will do time and understand contract management and delivery capabilities so that you can perform in some of the traditional things like writing requirements and experiences. we are trying to think of the space domain it needs and work of those into our training and education programs. >> this is one of the areas congressman rogers talked ab

, our alma mater of the air force academy. how would you characterize the responses that we're seeing out of dod and specifically the air force? are they doing it fast? is it neat in its approach or is it just average? >> right. i think it is below average, and it gives me no pleasure to say that, but i think we are not taking it seriously enough. again, it is as if everyone sees the train coming and everyone agrees the train is coming and yet no one is taking any steps to get out of its way and everyone is assuming that someone else is doing it and there's no sense of urgency and coherent activity to address this issue. and again, that's easy for me to say and easy for me to throw spears from the sidelines and one of the things we can do is leverage our great relationships we have with ukraine. we've given them a lot of resources and they're quite willing and eager to give us something back in return. we should be mopping that information up right now. we should be sending people there right now. >> thank you very much. my ti
