it says airasia on it. you can see the "a" on the plane, as well and you can see what appears to be some sort of door. it might be the emergency door. we don't know. this is important for a couple of reasons. first is that the tail of the plane is typically where you have the plane's voice recorder and data recorder. so if -- as long as those black boxes didn't move or shift when it was entering the ocean it could mean they're literally now inches from finding those important pieces of equipment. there could be more bodies in there and this is what indonesian officials have said since the beginning and the ceo of airasia saying he considers it a priority to find the rest of the bodies so that the families can have peace. they've said once they find the main part of the plane they think they'll find a whole lot of bodies inside so that's the other part of this, now that they found this they might be able to pull out a significant number of bodies so today, a very big development on both those fronts. >> we w

divers searching for the wreckage from airasia flight 8501 have been told to stand down for now. the weather has improved after days of rough conditions but conditions at the dive site remain murky making visibility near zero. another body was found before dive efforts were stopped. that brings the total number found to 31 and three more bodies have been identified bringing that total to nine. a fifth piece of large debris was also spotted. no confirmation of course that it's from this airplane. it could be from something else. and rescuers will continue to search today, using sew far. cnn's gary tuckman joins us live from surabaya. and gary you reported earlier that the bodies that they are finding are giving a little more possible information to investigators. >> reporter: right. one of the three bodies that was recovered and identified today is the body of a flight attendant, the only male flight attendant on the flight. what that means is 31 bodies have been recovered, one fifth of the plane. but two of them are flight attendants. the idea that gives you is the likelihood tha

plans to reach the airasia crash site changed due to the weather. the airport evacuated bodies and debris to go to the so-called site. officials believe the plane or bodies may have drifted around 100 nautical miles to land. dense vegetation and marshes make searching by land unrealistic. much of this area is barely inhabited. as the weather closes in the pilot tries to fly around it. but the front is too big. we're only half an hour into the flight. and the pilot has just decided that we have to abort this mission. he says that the weather up ahead is simply too dangerous. we cannot fly into those kinds of clouds and that rain so we're certainly going back to the airport. for those on board, they're going to be looking for debris and looking for bodies. they barely had a chance to even start their job. this was just along the coastline. this was not even out at sea where the weather is worse. back on land the team refuses to be disheartened. the local police chief tells me we'll keep going until we find everyone. more victim have flown to dry land

aircraft are taking part a very active part in the airasia search. joining us to talk about that and more rear admiral john kirby, pentagon press secretary. admiral, thanks very much for coming in. >> thanks for having me. >> how is that search operation for the u.s. navy going right now? >> it's going pretty well. we have two ships on station right now. they're working very closely with the indonesian navy and the indonesian search-and-rescue operation. "the uss sampson" has three helicopters, looking at the surface of the ocean to find debris. they have recovered some 15 bodies. and the "fort worth" is also there. she can go to shallower waters where other ships maybe can't get. she has a team of divers on board. and they are operating basically mini sonar devices that you tow behind their boats to see if we can't help map any of the surface -- >> are american sailors, divers actually going in the water? >> we have divers that are capable of doing that. but they have not done any diving. >> why is that? >> there's not been a need for it right now.

airasia did not.ort online the weather agency says it does put the full information on their website. and airlines can choose to download that instead. i just have to redo a statement here from airasia clarifying that point. they say, quote, airasia indonesia receives and disseminates the weather report that comes from the exact same source as the hard copy version made available at the meteorological station. another thing we learned from airasia up until flight 8501 the pilots would get the information from the flight operations center in the cockpit. it would be printed out. they would do what's called a self-briefing, read the weather report and sort of decide what steps they needed to take during the flight ahead. since 8501 crashed, that has changed. they now require -- airasia requires a face-to-face briefing with a flight operations officer. john the transport ministry here has actually issued a directive requiring that face-to-face briefing. not clear whether or not airasia is responding to t

we start with the search for airasia flight 8501. setbacks in the search now. today's operations had to be called off because of storms. officials say divers who were able to make it to the bottom of the sea encountered muddy waters leaving zero visibility. a large piece of wreckage initially believed to be part of the plane, well it turned out to be from a sunken ship. >> search teams did recover three more bodies today, bringing the total number recovered to 37. each victim is returned to surabaya in indonesia. that is where the flight originated. our david molko is there. david, we now know one of the large objects searchers spotted, they were very hopeful, it turned out to be from part of a ship wreck, not the jet at all. but there were other objects they found. what do we know about those? >> that's right, john and michaela. a lot of news coming in from the search zone on monday but just not the news that search officials wanted. really what's running the show here, what is deciding the pace of this search is the weather. we've been talking about the weath

why are they threatening to revoke airasia's license?essentially, every commercial aircraft that takes off has to have a permit to fly through airspace of different countries. it seems here that what's happened is the airasia had a permit to fly through the singapore route every day essentially up until october. what's happened since then is the indonesian authorities have reduced that flight frequency of seven flights a week down four flights a week and it seems as if the airasia permit didn't allow it to continue flying on a sunday. there is a bit of after technical caveat here in that although the aircraft took off local time on a sunday actually international aviation works on british meantime and on greenitch meantime it was still saturday so there is a bit of a tech technical caveat there the investigators would have to look atnnich meantime, it was still saturday so there is a bit of a technical caveat there the investigators would have to look at at. they were supposed to be flying on so many days. authorities don't actually know

the crash of airasia flight 8501.s since the plane disappeared with 162 people on board. david molko joins us from surabaya indonesia. david, as the search and recovery efforts go on more victims have been identified. what is the latest? >> reporter: good afternoon from surabaya. let's start with details coming in to us. this is on the island of borneo. paula hancocks has been there. they have been taking remains before flying them to surabaya. i understand there is a press conference. they are talking about the numbers of bodies recovered. a lot of different numbers moving around right now. we are hearing 14 that has been recovered. we are monitoring that. out of the search area offshore of 200 kilometers offshore they are continuing to face challenging weather conditions. waves of 2 to 3 meters in the search zone and cloud cover. we're told by officials here in indonesia that those conditions are not expected to improve through the weekend. certainly proving challenging for those teams as they try to recover additio
