overnight, another desperate attempt to give some closure to the families of those on board airasia flight 8501 airbus and find out exactly what went wrong. but complications are abounding today because strong winds and waves are as high as ten feet. indonesian officials believe that sonar equipment has detected the plane's fuselage about 100 to 165 feet underwater. within the last 24 hours, six bodies have been recovered including that of a female flight attendant still in her uniform. life vests, luggage and wreckage have also been recovered. and now the u.s. is sending a second ship to help in the search and recovery effort. it will join the destroyer the uss sampson which has been there for two days now. joining me now is nbc's brian mooar. what is the latest in this recovery operation? >> reporter: dara family members are getting devastating news. it is also a first step toward closure. as search crews in the java sea zeroed in on the wreckage of airasia flight 8501 the bodies of the first victims arrived at a military base in indonesia. shipping containers are being turned into makeshift morgues

indonesia airasia has a fleet of 30 airbus a-320s. airasia has been in business since 2001.. for more on airasia's safety record we're joined on the phone by the transport reporter. it's been around since 2001 so it's relatively a newer airline, but it has had a good reputation. has it always had that? >> caller: yes. it's been a good, well-run airline. it's profitable. and there have been no safety issues with the airline so far. this is actually the first major incident. >> so what do we know about this specific airplane then that was being flown, as far as how old this airplane was, when it was last when it last went through maintenance? what do we know? >> caller: this was delivered to the airline in 2008 so by airplane age standards, it was a pretty young, pretty new aircraft. it did undergo its last maintenance check in november is what the airline told us. so they would be i don't see any problems with any of that. it was a relatively new aircraft. and there would be no problem with the airplane itself. >> we only had this weather question that we're all kind of talki

airasia will order planes from airbus and then lease these planes out to these units around the region. >> as you were speaking we just saw the sign there at the singapore airport. it's kind of creepy to see yet another sign that you know that flight there on that board did not land. we remember mh 370 they had put "delayed" on 370 there in the airport in china. here we have qz8501 "go into foe counter." that sounds very formal. but we can tell people we are told that the airline has set up of course a crisis center to help deal with families there in singapore. and we hope that is the case and they are being comforted at had time. let's go back to -- it is really surreal that now we have another airliner based in kuala lumpur same year as mh 370. but different circumstances. different water as well. do you know much information about where they would be looking, the depth of the ocean here compared to mh370? >> well right now this is eerily reminiscent of the first day. it was the morning we discovered there was a problem with mh370. it occurred on a weekend. and i believe the waters

he's a seasoned pilot including 6100 hours with airasia on the airbus 320. us is president of the national safety council, the former chair of ntsb. david, obviously, there's a lot of difference between this and what we know about malaysia flight 370. one thing is similar, they both did not have a realtime tracking information that could have given constant data. still, why do these planes not have this? >> that's the question. we've had that question now for at least six or seven years. >> is it money? >> it's partly money. part is that there is no regulation that requires it. that's where it should begin. if they don't do that, there's issues for the airlines as to what they can write off on their taxes. it sounds simple -- it sounds stupid that they're doing that but without having that they can't accelerate depreciation and some airlines couldn't afford that. >> what would this technology allow? >> what it would allow is where the aircraft is at all times would be reported as well as the cabin altitude it would be critical to have. if we'd had that infor
