japan airlines, a 777 there had one of these in december. so the ntsb is already -- i mean, before they even get all of the pieces collected on the ground, they have combed through the records, they have combed through the inspections because on the last one, the report they issued last year from the previous united 777, they cited -- they faulted pratt & whitney's inspectors for not being trained in spotted the flaws. if they had gone back and spotted the flaws, it appears they could have. do we have a problem that's system wide, that's engine wide, that's pratt & whitney wide or do we not? >> we are just getting into cnn a statement from boeing which reads, we're following news out of the netherlands regarding the incident involving lgt 5504, that is the flight number. we'll refer you to the dutch safety board, statement goes on to say, about any information about the incident. that is the latest from boeing. david, look, there are a lot of unknowns here at that point. the fact that boeing is just saying, okay, you need to talk to the dutc

out from american airlines ceo doug parker as well as the president of the airline, robert ie some to the employees at the company saying that they will be issuing warn notices to the 13,000, approximately 13,000 workers telling those employees that they could be laid off starting april 1st remember, the current pale support program that was authorized by congress,it expires on march 31st, and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that the airline business is in no better shape than it was in the fourth quarter. and with american flying about 45% fewer flights and with passenger revenue down i think anywhere from 65 to 75% for the first quarter, they are not expecting things to improve come april, at least not immediately. so as a result, they're going to have to right-size their work force. we saw this with united last week we're seeing it today with american saying that if things don't change, they're going to have to issue some layoffs come april 1st. not a huge surprise. don't be surprised if you see this from other airlines as well american and united were the biggest

airlines combined. only limiting factor right now is the ability to produce this fuel at scale. so things like clever tax cuts or tax credits that would make it commercially viable could have a profound impact on our industry and on shrinking our carbon footprint. >> you're talking about incentives. are you hoping the biden administration will give more incentives rather than trying to impose regulations on the airline industry? air travel is one of the biggest polluters out there. there have been multiple reports, including one from the u.n., that we are very behind in getting ahead of climate change and we really need to act with urgency. i wonder if making a commitment to 2050 and just relying on incentives is enough? >> i think it is enough. you certainly have seen from our industry and i should speak for united, you've seen a clear process by united that we can't put it off anymore. even though we're going through the worst crisis our industry has ever faced, even we stand up and say we can't delay

it's extended to biotech, airlines or at least person airlines, and that's the -- american airlines, seek out potential value. what do you think of that strategy? >> yes. i think two things. and i actually, i think this is an example of markets being efficient, you know? you're looking at anomalies, and when you see stocks that have a large short base, hey, they become susceptible. the other point, neil, is we are all just sort of sitting at home in front of our screens looking at how to make money in stocks. we're getting money from the government. it's not all being used for consumption. personal savings is off the charts. you can't earn anything by keeping it in a savings account, so i think as an unintended consequence of trying to help consumers to get through the pandemic, we are kind of creating this speculative froth. so i, yeah, i think, hey, everybody should assume there's going to be risk in any type of investment that you do. neil: all right. final word there. guys, we'll have you back a little bit later to look at some macro issues that are weighing on the market. i've g
