american airlines and u.s. airways are creating one of the world's biggest airlines. the new carrier is expected to be worth around $11 billion. it will be branded american airlines but it would be run by the ceo of u.s. airways. american airlines as been under bankruptcy protection since 2011. let's get the story from an aviation consultant in washington, d.c. our american could have emerged from bankruptcy in successfully on its own, i think. u.s. airways has been very consistent in the idea that mergers need to take place in the u.s. industry to reduce the level of competition and to create carrier's large enough to survive. however, it's not entirely clear that mere size is a guarantee of success. the most profitable carrier in the world and in the u.s. is southwest. it's not the largest in the field. >> to the growing scandal over a food standards in europe. protesting beef products across the your opinion. they are to be dna tested for they are to be dna tested for traces

well, this morning american airlines and us airways will announce they are merging to form the world's largest airline. the deal's been in the works since august combining bankrupt american what the much smaller us airways. if this later airline mega merger is approved, four airlines will control about three quarters of the u.s. airline traffic. susan mcginnis is in washington with more on this story. susan, good morning. >> good morning. this is the latest mergener this massive consolidation that has taken place over just the last five or six years. this one's going combine the third and the fourth biggest airlines to form the biggest largest. now, the typical winners in these massive deals are usually airlines themselves because they can save and boost profits and also wall street. for travelers it often leads to higher fares, fewer flight, and fewer seats. american airlines and usz airways are joining forces to join the biggest airline in the world. >>> our best goal going forward is to make it the biggest strongest airline in the country, and i suppose that's about to happen. >> th

i beginning the system of american airlines and u.s. airways it will build the networking arc passengers want. one that will compete with the networking of delta and northwest and the low cost carriers like jetblue and southwest. the passenger benefit. new american airlines stem from the complimentary naimp. by beginning these we add origin, destination, and hubs to a networking with very little route dip indication. indeed out of the nearly 900 domestic routes whether he serve american airlines and u.s. airways only have 12 nonstop overlaps. also u.s. airways has provided extensive service. it will allow us to extend the focus to the american airlines system. combining these networks will create new exciting international opportunities. we will provide thousand of passengers better alternatives with over 1300 new routes worldwide. in addition the customers will have the potential to access -- sorry have the access the potential to access over 130 cities around the globe served by american but not yet served by u.s. airways and 62 served by u.s

airlines essentially gobble up all the business? >>> sit back and watch the flight taking off here from reagan national. you start to notice a pattern. us airways and american airlines are constantly flying out of the this airport. in fact figures show that almost 7 out of ever 10 flights leaving here are either us airways or american airlines planes. that has some concerned about a mo stenchal cornering of the market. >> they don't have to compete. you don't have to worry about keeping every customer happy. >> reporter: some travelers saying the new airline would lose business fast if it decided to raise fares dramatically. >> the customers will reject it. >> reporter: this is just a planned merger right now and there's still some procedure hoops for the airlines to jump through. also if the deal does go through, airline leaders are quick to point out a business strategy they don't know what it would like lie. he isn't issue area coating the potential impact. >> i think it's definitely going to mean higher prices. american airlines is in bankruptcy. >> and he says it's not just ticket prices that could go up. he thinks airline fees could also be affected.
