let me bring in al roker now. al, what are the conditions that helped fuel these fires? is there any sense and sign of relief? >> there is some relief coming, lester. we saw those air flights resume because the winds have died down. the biggest problem is since october 1st they've gotten less than 10% of their average rainfall. the good news is this high pressure/low pressure combo that has been squeezing these santa ana winds out, that's been the problem. well, now they're starting to move to the east and separate. so the winds are starting to die down. that's good news. in fact, you can see those winds overnight coming down. the gusts into single digits in some spots. now, the next thing we're worried about, that storm system in the southwest, that's going to cause 52 million people to be under winter storm warnings, advisories, watches. snowfall amounts, dallas two to five. three to six in tupelo. plus icing conditions stretching from texas all the way into the southeast. big travel problems over the next 24 hours. >> all right, al, thank you for that update. >>> in 6

al roker is here. any relief in sight, al?ittle bit, lester, and then it's going to get bad again unfortunately. the red flag warnings now still for 17 million people. wind gusts tonight. 65-mile-per-hour plus single-digit relative humidity. the gusts redevelop tonight, especially over the hills and the mountains. they die down a bit. then latter part of the weekend into next week they increase again unfortunately. thanks to a warming climate and persistent drought more than half of the top 20 largest fires have happened in california in the last five years. right now 86 million people looking at winter weather advisories, storm warnings from the southwest to the coast. big storm system now getting itself together, bringing snow to oklahoma, northern texas. one to three inches of a sloppy icy mix in dallas. six to nine in little rock. two to five in charleston. and lester, we're looking from norfolk l the way to dallas, anywhere from a tenth of an inch of ice to even a little bit less, going to cause some major problems on roa

al roker is here. what are you looking at? >> all right, lester, you can see the remnants of that snow still coming across washington, d.c. that's just about done. as sam mentioned, 10 to 25-degree below average temperatures tomorrow right into the weekend. windchills low single digits from sioux falls into the low 20s into the midsection of the country. and then we've got a second storm coming. it's going to move out of the gulf, out into the atlantic. right now what we're looking at from thursday to saturday, a widespread area from the midatlantic down to the south with heavier snow. ice in the mid mississippi river valley. strong storms down through the gulf. the model is not sure right now, lester, but we could be looking at a major snow impact event into the weekend. >> all right, al, thanks very much. >>> at the u.s. capitol, it was a very different scene from january 6th four years ago. the snow, as you just saw, but also congress quickly certifying president-elect trump's electoral college victory without the violence

here's nbc's al roker with a look back.o deadly storms making landfall only two weeks apart, hurricanes helene and milton leaving a trail of historic destruction across florida and the southeast. helene not only bringing hurricane force winds to the region, but also a historic storm surge. on september 26th, hurricane helene makes landfall near perry, florida, inundating areas with record breaking rainfall more than a foot in some locations, including the mountains of north carolina. catastrophic damage caused by the intense flooding leaves more than 200 people dead. helene, now the fourth deadliest storm in modern history. additional emergency search and rescue teams race in entire towns, cut off from communication. no power and water for weeks. then two weeks later, hurricane milton took aim at nearly the same location. florida's hard hit west coast, a climate change fueled storm. milton intensified from a category one to a category five in just 24 hours, making it the fastest case of extreme rapid intensification ever in

. >>> let us turn to the man of the moment, al roker. what's up? >> well, guys, good morning. you can see we have this pesky low-pressure system not going anywhere. that low is over eastern canada. jet stream to the south. so this persistent low is going to keep this unseasonably cold weather for the next few weeks. in fact, 250 million of us are at freezing or below. the only state without freezing temperatures, hawaii at this point. so we are going to be looking at this cold air. wind chills right now feels like 7 in chicago. 15 in albuquerque. atlanta feels like 16. 11 in new york city. highs today 27 in cleveland but feels like 16. houston will feel like 46. denver feels like 14 tomorrow. that continues. norfolk, buffalo with single-digit windchills. 39 in houston. that will go into next week. now we have another storm that's coming. we have winter storm watches for texas, oklahoma, arkansas and louisiana. this low-pressure system, the american model brings it down through the south. but look at all this snow in dallas. we could be looking at 4 to 5 inches of snow which co
