developing news in alameda. we have new information ability the sixteen agers seriously hurt after their car crashed into a tree. ktvu's claudine wong is live at the scene. you've just learned the drive caught him? >> just 15 years old. the other passengers in the car 15 years old and one 13-year- old. six people in this vehicle behind me when it crashed into a tree here on island drive. if you take a look at the top of the vehicle, you can see the roof is pulled back. that happened when they were trying to get the driver out, and it was not easy to get him out. we want to show you video of the extrication process. this is shortly after the accident happened at 1:30 this morning. there were six people in the car, five 15-year-olds. one 13-year-old. the driver the most seriously hurt. that driver was taken to high land hospital with life- threatening injuries. the other five people in the car threatened nonlife- threatening injuries. when this happened it's still unclear if anyone saw it happen but people heard i

a single car crash on island drive near the alameda municipal golf course. island drive is going to be shut down for a few more hours. you can see investigators on the scene. the car itself is hard to look at. just to be simple and honest. it's a four-door sedan. can't even make out what kind of car it is, the top sheered off. you can see the air bags did deploy. the saddest part, six teens under 16 years old, five of them 15 years old, and one 13-year-old were inside this car when it crashed. it collided with a tree. the driver, 15, is at highland hospital with life threatening injuries. this is according to police. the five passengers all taken to the hospital as well but they are expected to survive. the investigators out here, they are trying to determine if p drugs or alcohol played a part in this crash. again, that happened at 1:30 this morning. also we're learning from police that the owner of the car is said to be one of the parents of one of these passengers. that's the latest from here. marla tellez, "today in the bay." >> also new this morning, th

this was an emotional final day at the alameda county fair. that's because people took time to honor a jockey who was killed there last week. nbc bay area's jean is in pleasanton with more on how they chose to remember him today. >> reporter: diane, the last horse race of the county fair is about to begin. it has been an emotional day here at the track. earlier today, this morning dozens of people from the horse racing community and the fair gathered to remember jorge herera. he died thursday after being thrown off his horse during a race. he died from a head injury. the accident shocked the tight-knit racing community, reminding everyone how dangerous horse racing can be. herrera is remembered as a man as his word, someone who showed up for people who needed him. >> a lot of people tell you they're going to be there. but this young man was always there. he was a man of his word. he was dedicated to his craft. and it's a very tragic loss. >> reporter: the fair dedicated a race to herrera here on the last day of racing. flags are at half staff

happened early this morning in alameda at about 1:30 at island drive. the driver is in critical condition. and the other teens ranging in age from 13 to 15 were also injured. we have the report. >>reporter: rescue crew had to pry open the roof of the white chevy sedan to remove the 15-year-old driver. he suffered the most serious injuries when the car skidded off the street and smashed into a tree which has since been cut down by alameda city crew. neighbors who heard the crash say the most disturbing part was after the impact. >> they crashed and it was quiet for about a minute or 2. and then all of a sudden we heard oh, my god are you okay? are you okay? like screaming the names. >>reporter: through the day friends of the critically injured driver have taken to twitter to spread news of the crash and offer their best wishes. 15-year-old remain at high land hospital. that's where other friends and their parents also spent some of the day hoping for details on his condition. total of 6 teenagers in the car including 215-year-old young men. 31 315-year-o
