alameda county fire got the call just before 8:30 tonight.ickly ripped through the business and firefighters had to move into defensive mode as a roof came crashing down of an upholstery and home furnishing store as the fire grew to three alarms. this fire is just off east 14th street between georgia and euclid. it's in a complex of several different businesses. firefighters tried to save the store, but it was pretty clear early on that the store would be a complete loss and this type of business created a few challenges for the firefighters working this blaze. >> going into a furnishing shop or upholstery shop it's a very large building. it's complex in nature. they had a lot of obstacles and there's a lot of combustibles in the building. >> reporter: as i mentioned, the fire moved into that sweet fingers restaurant, but there are two apartments on top of the restaurant. firefighters tell me all the residents have been evacuated. there's also a home directly behind this store here and those residents have been evacuated as well. there are no

the whale in alameda is hanging around seaplane lagoon, not far from the old navy base. that's where abc7 news reporter laura anthony is live with the story tonight. laura? >> well, hi, dan. if you'd come to me a few seconds earlier, the whale came up just behind me. we've seen this whale all afternoon, circling in this area here in what's known as seaplane lagoon. it occasionally comes to the surface. what we haven't seen is any of the breaching that's been occurring over the last several days. it apparently came here to feed, but scientists aren't certain why it came this far in and whether it's really getting enough to eat. it's not necessarily lost, but apparently in distress. that's the word from the experts, the marine mammal center on the rare sighting of a humpback whale in the san francisco bay. is it in trouble? >> well, it's lost a lot of weight. we can tell that. so there is some problem with it that we're just not sure what it is at this point. that's why we're monitoring it on a daily basis. so -- but it still has a lot of energy. >> despite its weight loss
