we are here at alamo square. one of the changes you can see here behind me the city has fences surrounding most of the park to keep runners out. that is because this iconic park has always been a popular place for runners to stop and in past years neighbors complained about public intoxication, trash and people urinating. the 7 1/2 mile race stars tens of thousands of runners and walkers. many people view it more like a parade. those in that last category drink and dress in costume and some don't wear clothes at all. city officials banned alcohol from the race a few years back. many drink before the race or while it is going on. the race has a long colorful history and started as a way of lifting spirits following the 1906 quake. we talked to people preparing for tomorrow's race. >> we have shirts that say run. i thought they said rum. >> another one says i hate running. >> i come to san francisco lot for other running events. i think this is going to be a really fun one. >> reporter: also this year san francisco

at issue, 57 barrels of nuclear waste from work on weapons at los alamos labs. sludge, workers gloves, clothing and other items contaminated with plutonium and amarisium. they fear the way this stuff is being handled represents an imminent and substantial threat to the public, and here is why. at least one of the barrels broke open when something made it unexpectedly heat up. it happened about 2200 feet below ground after several of the barrels had been transferred from los alamos to this federal nuclear storage site. the incident in february forced officials to temporarily keep workers off that part of the site and test them. 22 came up positive for low level exposure. so how could organic cat litter be to blame? cat litter is used inside the barrels to soak up excess moisture. one theory is that maybe when workers switched to organic litter, it did not do the job as well as the inorganic cat litter that was previously used, and that triggered a chemical hot spot. but that is just a theory right now, breanna. so the mystery remains as the news gets out, of cour

brian flores is live at ail -- at alamo square with more. >> reporter: good morning.ou can't blame the beauty of the victorian homes known as the painted ladies. you have the city in the backdrop. it's a very popular tourist attraction. for a while, it got so popular that large tour groups and buses would come through despite a rule prohibiting them coming through, but they still do. last november, the transportation leaders voted to prohibit buses from driving through. they say it's become a danger issue. people said they couldn't enjoy the park because large tour groups would be here. new street signs warning of this went up. but some tour bus drivers still break the rules because they know it won't be enforced. we spoke to several people around here. while some say it remains an issue, the situation is getting better. >> the numbers have dropped dramatically. occasionally there is a bus that will come by usually from out of town. they didn't know if things had changed. >>> can't call a police home when it's constantly invaded with people leaning out of the bus and

this is next to alamo square park and has enclosed the park. it has gone up for the first time this year in the race. we talked to a san francisco police sergeant about the changes. >> in the past, a lot of spectators and run isers have have problem in the park as far as broken glass, grass, and thing have been destroyed so park and rec wants to preserve that so people in the community can enjoy it year-round. >> reporter: it's known for its costume, sometimes the lack of costumes of the runners, and we will do our best to avoid showing nudity. people who live on the race route have complained about the mess and drunken revelry so the fence, security changes and alcohol checkpoints are some improvements they have tried to put in place and will have seven red cross checkpoints to help anyone who may need their blisters tended to or anyone who may be a little dehydrated, just in case people get alcohol through and get a little disoriented because of it. if you could turn the camera over here -- a thousand more port-a-potties are on the race route

first the painted ladies of alamo square, now lombard street.cals are pushing for restrictions on their world- famous street. if you have driven down the crooked part of lombard street, you know it's usually a very long wait to do so. well, imagine for the people who live there, it can be longer and more frustrating. some say it can take them an hour and a half to get through the traffic near their home. today, san francisco's municipal transportation agency will vote on an experimental program to close the crooked part of lombard street on weekends between june 21st and july 13th and on the 4th of july. only people living there would be able to get through with the car. now, this is similar to the complaints living near alamo square, near the row of homes knownance the painted ladies. after years of arguments, the transportation board voted to exclude commercial buses with ten or more seats from that area. that started this year but tour buses have been spotted breaking the rules as they tried to make their customers happy. now, people who work
