triplex and now several families are left homeless. ktvu's lorraine blanco is on danville boulevard in alamo describing some of the quick action the tenantslames. >> reporter: good morning, dave. this really is a good reminder to check those smoke detectors as often as possible. that's what firefighters say saved eight lives this morning. and i just got a look inside the apartment where the fire got started. a tenant just opened the door for us. you can see from the back corner over there, the burnt, charred mess on the ceiling where the heater apparently had some sort of issue. the fire is still under investigation. but that's where they believe it started early this morning. now, firefighters arrived at this converted alamo home just before 1:00 a.m. with three engines and two trucks. a simle mother -- single mother and her two children lived there. in all, all eight got out safely. one tenant admit esjust took the batteries out of his smoke detector but luckily, his neighbor did not. >> i didn't hear anything, and she woke me up banging on the window. i came out and the kids were returning around. she was screaming fire. i didn't know
