alan brinkley is the alan nevins professor of american history at columbia. among his works are "voices of protest," huey long, father cobb lynn and the great depression which won the national book award for history. the "unfinished nation," "the end of reform" are two other of his works. the book we're focusing on today and though he didn't ask me to, i'm happy to hold up a hard-bound copy which is still available is the publisher "henry luce and his american century." please join me in welcoming alan brinkley. >> thank you, marty. the title of this session, historians, journalists and the challenges of getting it right is very apt for a talk about henry luce because getting it right was not always something that henry luce did. first of all, i want to thank roger for organizing this session. i'm very grateful for all these men joining this conversation. i'm asked to speak about henry luce. which i'm glad to do. we shouldn't think about this as just a conversation about luce though i do think he's a useful model for understanding how journalism can shape his

alan wang in for dan ashley. we start tonight with a bay area students caught up in a scam, hacking in the school computer. abc 7 news reporter leslie brinkley is live outside berkeley high with the details. leslie? >> reporter: well, so far the toll here stands at 32 students suspended, two expelled and more about to face the consequences. >> about 50 kids so i guess they have been skipping a lot. they were selling the teacher's access passwords to students. >> i heard that someone hacked into the system and changed attendance. >> many students at berkeley high school say they heard classmates talk about clearing absences and tardies for themselves or for a friend, even charging money for it. >> i heard someone made an administrator account or something. >> administrators notice the discrepancies in december. >> absences logged into the student database by teachers had been corrupted. they had been altered. >> five administrators spent months chasing paper and cyber trails before confronting the students just before spring break. the changes to attendance records were made from computers on campus as well as from homes. one student said kid
