ago withe a brief time alan gomez, immigration reporter at usa today. you have been following this story for years. how will it benefit the people you have been talking to who have been calling for this reform? is hard to summarize but it covers so much of their lives. new educational opportunities will be open to them. walk out ofy can the house and be confident they are going to come home that day, i spoke to undocumented immigrants who have written out living wills so somebody can know what to do with the money they have accumulated. this is really such an emotional moment for so many of them. left with a lot of uncertainty because this decision could be revoked when the new president comes in. >> that is the difficulty. the only thing everybody agrees would be the fact that washington has to pass a bill to a dress the immigration system so we can stop having this issue of having so many undocumented immigrants. they are very happy they got what they got. there is another 6 million that didn't qualify. the idea that soon as another president comes in

alan gomez of "usa today," before we bet you go, can we talk about your history and our other story in "usa today" that the 2010 arizona law helped ignite this debate? >> yeah. it's just been a fascinating ride these last few years kind of looking at the direction the country has. arizona was really sort of the best mark, the leader of states saying, look, the feds haven't done anything, we have to find our own solution. several other states followed in the years to come. a dozen or more than a dozen states tried to kind of copy arizona's law, which basically cracked down on undocumented immigrants in their state and pretty much empowered local police to act as immigration agents. that was an intense wave of people trying to figure out how to deal with this since congress wasn't doing anything. in the last couple years congress has responded by trying to pass a bill but we've obviously seen all those efforts fail in last last couple years so ultimately brought us i think to this point where the president was saying, look, washington need to do something. congress is clearly incapable o

ron brownstein, our cnn political analyst and editorial director of "the national journal" and alan gomez for "u.s.a. today," who has followed this issue extensively. ron let me start with you, how significant are the changes that the president announced last night? >> this is i think a huge moment. substantively it affects us as the spot pointed out, potentially five million people and also politically. a huge moment for both parties. like many other things that the president has done in his second term, this really aligns the democratic party with the priorities of its new presidential coalition, which are minorities, millennials at the expense of further alienating older, more conservative voters who moved away from him in 2014. and for the republicans in their response, on one hand they feel enraged the president is doing this in the face of the election. but they also face a long-term demographic challenge, if they can't improve their share of the growing minority vote, the math gets tougher for them to win the white house. a big moment for both parties. >> alan, there's a fascinatin
