alan gomez, to you first. you wrote today that this is going to mean a significant shift in the government's deportation strategy. just how big a shift are we talking about? >> it's really difficult to put into context just how big this is. there's many components of what president trump is trying to do that he's going to need help from coness. when we talk about building a border wall, hiring 10,000 more immigration and customs enforcement officers and agents, hiring more border patrol, hiring more immigration judge, he's going to need a lot of help from congress on, that but even if you put all of that aside, changes that were announced today in department of homeland security memos represent one of the biggest shifts in immigration enforcement we've seen in a generation. the pool of undocumented immigrants that are now available to be deported has vastly increased, the powers of immigration agents have vastly increased, the ability of local police to be deputized to carry out not just ice function but borde

today" immigration reporter alan gomez. the immigration community calls them raids. ice wants to call them planned enforcements. was this something already planned, or was this a result of trump executive orders? >> everything ice is saying right now is this was absolutely a routine operation, that they had actually started planning before president trump signed his executive order on january 25 that really was designed to ramp up deportations. i can tell you the obama administration did two or three of these a year. around this time last year, the obama administration led a raid against women and children that were coming from central america. it was very controversial at the time. but it kind of shows that this is part of their practice. they do this two or three times a year. and according to ice this is something that has been weeks in the planning and had nothing to do and was not coming from any different orders from the trump administration. >> sreenivasan: is there a wider net cast because of what president trump is interested in? >> absolutely. when we hear

there's no efds yet to say what's happening. >> alan gomez the reaction from the community there must be a lot of anxiety. >> we are seeing people turning to sanctuary churches, possibly moving to the sanctuary cities around the country who refuse to cooperate with federal immigration officials, but following up with what ari was just talking about, the idea that right now there's a certain number of immigration agents that can go out and conduct deportations. the federal government has a certain amount of money to deport people so there's a limit to how much president trump can increase the number of deportations but i think the reason you're seeing that much fear in the community is that the target population of undocumented immigrants has changed dramatically under these memos laid out by homeland security. before had to convicted with a crime to be and they only have to be charged with a crime. that's why you're seeing the panic in the community. >> the president has brought new orders and the one that we're expecting also to fix the problems in the original executive order. >> i
