so the thing about alan krueger, the upside of the pick is alan krueger.is a loy bore economist. he is a guy that studies the job market and one of the best in the country. he is known for with economist, a guy who studies the job market and he's good at it, one of the best labor economists in the country. he's breathed a lot of new life in the field when it fell a few years ago, but allen kruger is also a long time clinton and obama administration appointee, he served with geithner, summers, all these guys for a long time, so if you look at the way the obama administration has been picking for these positions, goolsbee following roemer, daly following emmanuel, people they know, they pick from inside the administration. when you look for an economist who's a good economist but knew these guys and served there before, that was alan krueger. the down side is you have another economist who is part of the administration team and thinks like they document if you want this to be a pick that broaden the administration's horizons, you didn't get that. >> it's not

alan krueger is an expert on unemployment. his selection is the third attempts by the president to make good on his promise to focus on the economy and jobs. it has been less than a week since all charges were dismissed against the former imf chief dominique strauss-kahn. he met with his former colleagues at the fund. it could not of been a particularly comfortable meeting because he was forced to resign. this was a bit of an odd thing, was it? >> i think what was interesting -- the fact that there were 15 or more reporters the bank finding a lot of interest still in this case of dominique strauss-kahn. and it was a private meeting with former colleagues, people who've had worked with him for the best part of four years. he clearly felt the need to go back and talk to those people, many of whom are thought to the been quite upset actually about the whole controversy and the way it tainted the institution itself. @ think the point it to make about all this is -- i think the point to make about all this is it he clearly intended

is there any particular importance to the background of alan krueger that means this is where the president'sr the remainder of the first term? >> i know allen. we worked together on different issues when he was in treasury. i respect him greatly. i think he will provide and continue to provide good leadership and counsel to the president and to his economic team and us. i look forward to working with him. i think he will bring to a depth and a greater understanding about what our economic situation is and how to help remedy that. i think it will be great. i know that the president -- we urgently need these positions filled. i would hope that the congress and senate will make their voices heard, they truly understand the role that he will play and has played in previous administrations. even at the department of labor, he was chief economist there. i know him as a very intelligent, thoughtful, and highly respected individual. >> would you be dismissive of those who say that the appointment of those with department of labor experience means anything about where the president's agenda is going?

what do we expect from alan krueger? >> look, he's a princeton guy as you point out.ic. if you look at his past work and what he studied, look, i'll pass the opinion that it's not promising for the future. this man has written very much in favor of a value added tax, a consumption tax, ok? the tax. the guys like taxes. he's written very much in favor, he was part of the team that wrote cash for clunkers. with that success, how did that really work? that was another example of government spending. so you've got taxes, spending and very much -- and he very much favors the minimum wage. he doesn't think that destroys jobs. >> you say he's an academic and he is like the guy that came before him. would you like to see somebody from, i don't know, the world of business that's actually created jobs? >> yes. look, what we want in america surely is to stimulate the private sector. get private enterprise going! that's how you expand the economy. give me somebody who knows how private enterprise works. not somebody who studied it from an ivory tower who thinks he knows the theor
