alan pizzey is there. and the real-life bad news bears. a minor league baseball team auctions off everything, right down to the concession stand. captioning sponsored by cbs this is the "cbs evening news." >> axelrod: good evening. this is our western edition. i'm jim axelrod. the national basketball association is investigating what it calls disturbing and offensive comments, apparently made by a team owner. donald sterling, the owner of the los angeles clippers, is at the center of a controversy that's been exploding since this morning after the web site tmz posted audio they say is sterling making racist remarks about african americans. this is the longest tenured owner in a league whose players are mostly black. the clippers are in the middle of a play-off series, and sterling's players are said to be furious. late today, the clippers organization said it does not know if the tape is legitimate or has been altered. but as vinita nair reports, sterling did apologize to anyone who may have been hurt by the remarks attributed to him. >> r

alan pizzey has our report. >> reporter: survivors of the deadliest disaster yet on the peak were brought down by helicopter. the avalanche roared down on the sherpas as they were crossing what was known as the popcorn field, one of the most perilous parts. it was overcome with crevaces. >> om of these ice blocks, some of them are the size of a car. you don't know when they'll go. >> reporter: more than 4,000 people have been to the top of the summit since 1953. nearly 250 people have died trying. conrad anchor has reached the summit three times. >> if you're a good climber you can make it to the summit within your safety parameters but you're all equal when you're walking through that ballroom of death. >> reporter: for the sherpa guides, making that risk it can earn them $5,000. ten times the annual pay in their isolated homeland. permits have been issued for 300 climbers which means work for an equal number of guides. the four day halt to climbing has been declared while a search for the missing sherpas goes on. for "cbs this morning" alan pizzey. >>> more after shocks are in new mexic
