. >> up next, hift rstory profess alan taylor and nicole eustace. we recorded this interview at the organization of american historians meeting in milwaukee, wisconsin. it's just under 30 minutes. >> american history tv is at the annual meeting of the organization of american historians in milwaukee. we're joined by professor alan taylor from the university of california-davis and nicole eustace who teaches history at new york university. thank you for being with us. you're here at the conference, the annual meeting, to talk about the war of 1812 and here with us to talk about the war of 1812. let's start, professor eustace, with a look at the country in 1812. what was the population size? >> the u.s. in 1812 was as they would have said at the time a young and rapidly expanding population. the population in 1812 was about 7.2 million people and it had nearly doubled in the 20 years since the first census in 1790. a little bit less than doubled. it's a rapidly growing population, and it's a population that is really focused on that as a source of nat

alan dershowitz. and dr. janet taylor, a psychiatrist. let me start with you, janet taylor. because i can see you reacting to what you were hearing there. what is your assessment of what's been going on this week in court? >> well, you know, i'm so thankful these survivors came forward because maybe we can put an end to the notion that a, boys don't get sexually a becaused, or we can't get enough evidence to get what i think frankly is a monster who has groomed, who used his power of authority to take advantage of these victims. so i think we're hearing the stories as we need to, they're horrible, that maybe we will listen to our children, notice what's going on with them and bring people like this to justice. >> one of the bizarre aspects of this is that the state that is putting this on is the only state in america that doesn't allow expert testimony. which i just find absolutely baffling. why would they not allow it? what difference does that make to a jury's ability to comprehend perhaps some of what is going on and what they're hearing? >> this is going to sound strange

this chairman put the committee ahead of himself while alan greenspan put himself ahead of the committee. that's an important point. john taylore disagrees with basics if the committee were to extend the guidance, he would go along with it as well. >> diane, quickly, your thoughts on that. very good point. >> i agree with them. john would have to square what he said with what they are communicating and how long would that be in place. do i agree that the institution of the fed, and this is a really important point for financial markets, institution of the fed is important for any fed chairman who enters. that said we can see it change a lot over time depending who the fed chairman is. >> going to leave it there, guys. thanks so much for your time, diane and steven. >>> coming up next, board of trade weighs in on regulation and more, coming down to the closing in europe. we have only nine minutes to go so we'll be right back.
