alaska.rm swept through months ago. now we should tell you tonight that the tanker and the cutter are situated less than a half mile off the coast of nome and crews are ready to begin piecing together a huge segmented pipe that will actually lay on top of the ice and transfer 1.3 million gallons of fuel to the lahr bore. the u.s. coast guard telling the fox news channel they had to wait it out to make sure that the disturbed ice had refrozen and making it safe for the crews. once the hose is down and fuel is flowing, personnel will walk its length every 30 minutes or so to ensure that there are no leaks. and each segment has its own spill containment area as a precaution and the this enter transfer can take from 36 hours to five days and to say this this fuel is needed bad may just be an understatement. it's been a brutal winter in alaska, temperatures dipping to minus 60 degrees in part and nome's next opportunity for a fuel transfer wouldn't come until spring, harris. >> harris: wow, it is

we know alaska is cold and get snow. how unusual is this? >> they are having a brutal weather.hree states in our country have more than average and everyone less. alaska and texas and "morning meeting" seeing a true winter and the rest of us happy to see a couple of snowflakes. here in the middle of winter, washington, d.c. and baltimore saw their first snowflakes of the winter season. i mean, that's just not something you hear about too on which. a couple of winters ago we got nailed down there with two or three feet of know. that was yesterday and didn't accumulate much. about a half-inch. the rainfall in houston yesterday, 40 rescues took place. this little band that you see here is a doppler estimated rainfall total the yellow and orange shows you 2 to 3 inches of rain through the downtown southern side of houston and happened in about an hour. any time it rains that hard in houston you'll get flooded. mississippi coastline, a low. in between dallas and midland. midland, texas, yesterday, picked up 7 to 8 inches of snow and by their standards that is a big snowstorm. rain n

in cordova, alaska, it just won't stop. town of cordova this winter and more fell yesterday. the last time we checked with national correspondent ben tracy, he had made it as far as anchorage. this morning, we can tell you ben is in cordova. through the blizzard to get there. >> the pilots told us we had a 1% chance of making the landing here in cordova. as you can see, we made it. we're driving in on the only road that goes into cordova. it's surrounded by mountains and glaciers. the national guard has been doing everything they can to keep the road open. it's really the only way into town. when we got into town, we saw this. >> the only melting snowmelter that's mobile in alaska. >> they brought this thing in on a barge. it heats the snow to 150 degrees and flushes it down the sewer. >> are you melting the snow because there's nowhere else to put it? >> yeah. that's one word for it. >> this is a treat. it's completely backed up with snow. >> you got to get the snow out of here. >> the alaska national guard has been on the
