i mean, this is happening in alaska against this very real back drop of hospitals across alaska implementing care. right? hospitals across the state operating above capacity. they're having to implement rationing of health care. because the number of unvaccinated covid patients has so swamped the health system that they can't provide even life saving care to people who otherwise would be getting it. the doctors and nurses suffering under those conditions are the ones being threatened and assaulted in the health care setting. just as public officials are getting threatened in public meetings about things like mask ordinances. despite the threats of violence hurled at anchorage assembly members by the public, despite that intimidation i should tell you the anchorage assembly just passed the mask requirement for indoor spaces in anchorage. their vote was 9-1. that said, tonight as we got on the air anchorage's republican mayor who has repeatedly downplayed the virus, issued a veto against the mask requirement. republicans from the governor's mansion in alaska to the state legislature have echoe

as william brangham reports, alaska is among the most impacted right now. >> brangham: alaska is experiencing right now. the surge there is made worse because of the state's huge size, and that its limited health care system largely relies on major hospitals in anchorage, the state's largest city. so far, 20 hospitals and health facilities in the state have triggered so-called "crisis standards of care," because they're so short on beds and staff. alaska has flown in nearly 500 medical workers to assist over the next few months. just 58% of the population is fully vaccinated. jeannie monk is the senior vice president of alaska's state hospital and nursing home association. jeannie monk, thank you so much for being here. i wonder if you could give us a quick snapshot of how things are going there right now. >> thanks, grad to have a chance to chat today. well, while things seem to be improving in the resof the country, alaska is facing the worst surge of the pandemic, and we're really struggling as a health system. starting in august, we saw case counts and hospitalizations really increasing,

this is particularly true of part of alaska. in the frozen tundra of alaska, the largest oil field in north america is suddenly discoved in the deadhorse area outside prudhoe bay. and the state of alaska is suddenly super rich. since the first discovery of oil, prudhoe bay has been the scene of an ongoing adventure. alaska became a company town. around the time that oil came in is when don young was elected. thank you. and then frank murkowski was elected in 1980 during the reagan revolution. there are strange things done 'neath the mnight sun by the men who moil for gold. together, they fought these land battles, which were part of the new oil perspective. because of money coming from oil development, the come tax w repealed in alaska and the state sends you money in t mail. so that was the successful strategy by the development crowd. because today alaska is hungry for oil money like a heroin addict needs a hit. all the great stuff you've gotten from prudhoe bay, this 40 years of gravy train, we're gonna get you another one. t

alaska has very limited health capacity.ve had limited health care capacity and i think it's really hard to triage patients knowing you have the ability other times to be able to provide care, and now we don't have that ability. the amazing thing you see is health care providers finding amazing ways to come together. the emergency departments are open. we are just incredibly stressed and incrediby strained, and that's why we're asking alaskans to mask up and to get vaccinated. we need everybody to be able to respond to this pandemic because we as alaskans need to work together right now. >> as i understand, it's 60% of alaskans that are vaccinated against the virus. what is the state doing to boost those numbers, and have you given any consideration to mandates like we've seen in new york and california? >> alaska was the most vaccinated state in the country for quite some time, really because of our tribal partners being able to get it out to every corner in the state. unfortunately we've seen misinformation really take ove
