mcconville: in the arctic, we put out a new strategy and we are looking at how we operate out there. historically alaska has been a basing operation. a stryker brigade is there but that's not designed to operate in the coldest winters so we are training the troops and getting the right equipment so they can operate in that environment all the time. we also have to operate around the world so some of the systems we are developing, you will see speed and range in convergence becoming very important. if you are operating in africa or south america and suddenly the ability to operate from a base, the more speed you have in an aircraft or range you have gives you that much more capability. we are in 140 countries around the world and we need to have those capabilities so we can work with allies and partners with a global capability to maintain the world order we enjoy today. ms. youssef: what is the u.s. army's role in the thailand community and can you elaborate on how the army is working with navy to prepare on how you would work in a conflict with china. sec. whitley: when we look at what type of capabili

alaska a little bit. i think my state is most unique certainly and you'll see it when you're up there. but whether it is climate, arctic ocean fisheries there's so many huge scientific things that we can learn from what's happening in alaska. here's a bit of a frustration federal aid study these but they do it in places that aren't in alaska. so i need your commitment to come up see the state, but also help me get the scientists studying these alaska issues to actually be in alaska. this has been a problem noaa there was this giant migration scientists were studying alaska issues, but left alaska. you wouldn't have scientists studying the grrk do it from illinois right? so i'm just saying we need to fix that. can you comment on that at all best to be a scientist studying something in the place where it is taking place right? >> senator there's some things you can learn from a distance and some things you can learn from a computer simulation but you can't learn about natural places without being there. and so i think that's a broad statement that i strongly support it. we need people there if to observe and be part of t
