because i had never understood the nature of our own alaska native history. until i took a few months during that spring to look back at our country's history and the relations between nations that involved land, and with that comprehension i came down to juneau, trying to do whatever it was that we might do to try to protect our land at that point in time, seven years after statehood. and i remember how fragile the state really was, because we had small population, almost no profit, private property to tax of any consequence. the little industry we had couldn't pay nor little government we had it and was questionable really in retrospect whether or not alaska could actually survive as a state. and eagen, when he came back, he ran alaska like he ran his store. you know, penny by penny. stack's paper this high because he knew that the state was barely making it. but my story really begins 29 miles above the arctic circle and is a described it in the book 100 miles from the russian mainland and 50 miles from the international dateline so that was two -- 50 mile

the highest number of deaths per capita and incredibly patriotic population that includes the alaska native population, almost 20% of my constituents who served have some of the highest rates in the military of any ethnic group in the country, despite let's face it during world war ii there was a lot of discrimination going on from the federal government to this group of patriotic americans. so, we had a very good discussion and i appreciated that. most of it was about these issues as it relates to alaska and so the first thing i would like from you is to get a commitment to come with me to meet with my veterans in t and e these patriotic americans firsthand with. i think it really had an impact on some of our challenges. can i get that commitment from you? one of the ways va extends reach into my status through partnerships with alaska native health organizations whether it's tribal sharing agreements with the va, one of the many aspects of the mission act that focus on extreme states like ours and some of the other states is these tribal sharing agreements that are mandated in the mission
