amanda golden is on capitol hill with the latest on the covid relief packaged and monica alba is following reaction from the white house. good morning to all of you. amanda, the bill goes back to the house. when are they expected to vote on it? >> we heard yesterday from house majority leader steny hoyer saying they're going to vote on tuesday. it needs to repass the house because the senate made changes to the package. the house needs to repass it before president biden can sign it into law. democrats are confident biden will be able to sign this into law before march 14th, before that deadline when unemployment benefits are set to expire. that's just one week away. democrats pushing forward, expecting this to be signed into law before the end of the week. >> the first legislation really of the biden administration there. monica, in the meantime, the president says americans should expect the stimulus checks this month. do we know an exact timeline on that? >> in the next couple weeks, kendis and lindsey. that's the expectation. this was the top priority for the white house. that's why pr

monica alba is outside the white house. julia ainsley is with us. dean of brown university school of public health. i want to start with julia and the issue of immigration, the border and this refugee crisis with the unaccompanied minors. mayorkas is on the border today. that's obviously a little bit of public relations. what are they saying to you about this growing problem of essentially holding these unaccompanied minors much longer than the legal limit? >> reporter: well, there's a little bit of finger pointing and there's a lot of scrambling right now. we have dhs needing another agency, health and human services, to get as many beds open as they can to hold the children so they can get out of the border processing facilities. as we reported overnight, there are more than 500 children who have been there in the border processing facilities over ten days. just to recap the conditions there, the reason why there's a three-day legal limit is because often they don't have beds. they sleep on the floor, on mats, given an aluminum blanket. sometimes

president biden talked yesterday in his press conference and joining me to talk about that, nbc's monica alba, a former aide to the george w. bush white house and state department and robert gibbs served as press secretary for president obama. monica, we'll start with you out in front of the white house. you've got the president, he was criticizing republican efforts to limit voting. what is he planning to do about it? >> yes, yesterday notably just during the press conference, he was asked about this more broadly and he spoke out against voter right suppression in probably the most empassionate answer of the entire hour-long news conference. he called that effort un-american. he said it was the most pernicious thing. he summed it up, frankly, by saying "it's sick. it's sick." it wasn't specific to georgia, just hours later after this law passed was significant so the white house hasn't had a specific action or comment beyond what the president said yesterday. but this really also sets up a political challenge for the president, who does want to pass voting rights legislation and hr-1, which

with me now is nbc news correspondent monica alba. monica, explain what's going on here.hat happened to these staffers? >> this is a little bit of a complex situation, katy, and that's because at the heart of the matter, according to the white house, is you have to basically have a security clearance in order to get a lot of these white house jobs. in the past you would have to answer questions about drug use and all of this, of course, in the rearview mirror that could potentially disqualify you from getting that clearance. so the biden administration said they were going to relax some of those policies in order to take into account some of these younger staffers who wanted these jobs, who would want to answer those questions truthfully, of course, that then could potentially be told you can't have this white house job and this security clearance. so it seems that in some cases, they were able to grant a waiver but that at least five staffers have been dismissed from the white house and terminated from those positions after a security review. and white house officials ar

nbc's monica alba is at the white house. so, monica, what have we learned about this overall shake-up? what's the latest? >> reporter: this is new action from the dhs secretary who's juggling a whole range of issues, so that's the backdrop to this decision to really get rid of the current members on this advisory council. about 32 of them were notified in a letter yesterday that we've obtained that they no longer will serve on this. it's an unpaid position, and we should point out there were both democrats and republicans, some of whom had served on this kind of board for years, but they have essentially been told, you will no longer be needed in this role as the secretary undertakes this new review comprehensively, and there are some people who are staying on. the chairman and the vice chair are going to be trying to assess in what roles maybe they can remake this council, but what's also interesting to note here is that on that list of people who were on the council, several trump loyalists, people like ken cuccinelli and
