for the worst of the worst, and much to our delight as reporters, everybody who has done time at alcatraz, their entire prison file is open to the public to see. you can go to the archives in san bernardino, california and read all the files, rerts wrote to his brother while in prison, you know, what his work regard was like while in prison, and it was just amazing to get a glimpse of him as a young man, and one of the things we have known him in recent years is this vicious, scary criminal killer, and to see these letters, if you're in federal prison, at least at that time, you were allowed to write to temperature people and he had a big family, so six of the people were immediate family members, and the other four were all priests. who else would a killer write to? [laughter] one of the fascinating things is that talking about political connections, so while whitey's in alcatraz, his brother, billy, is in boston college law school, and we can see from the records that billy had a father, who was later a conman, become as brother's mentor, and father john was big into prison reform, and

the mia families known as the alcatraz "defiant" alcatraz eleven. because of their work because of what they did in 1973 and after eight years shoemaker was reunited with his family. the last time he saw his son he was eight in the picture he was two months old. can you imagine? but there has never been a situation like this before and hopefully not again put their shared experience misstate a very cohesive group to keep up with one another and one of the biggest gifts that this book has given me is the chance to get to know these people. i never thought some of my good friend is that 80 year-old a pow that has been so special. when we look at this in it is important to remember it is not just about alcatraz eleven or the pow and of the american military that make america what it is. but with that service men and women realize there has never been another group of american that has endured more for longer in american history. and the other thing to take away is not a bad day. they keep for being here for your service. well, let me tell you, i got a friend to build me a replicate of alcatraz p. diddy still in my garage in my backyard. and one night he came and he kidnapped me, and i had a bucket, you can figur forget whe bucket might've been for, and a blanket, pair of pants and a t-shirt. and a little bottle of water. josh locked me in that so but i didn't think this was a problem because an is going to kidnap me at some point, and so there was a key lock, a keypad lock and i stashed a key inside the so-so if it got kind of rough i could get out. and so that first night i probably had been in there for i don't know, probably eight hours, hey, i was bored and this kind of cool but i couldn't sleep, i thought i'm going to go get a blighted. no one is going to know and i'm just going to take my key and open the little holes they have for me, reach around and unlock the padlock. well, i don't know what this says about me, but josh had apparently anticipated i might do this and he changed the padlock. so in just a tiny, tiny, tiny way, tiny way, i got a little small taste of wha

when you look at this, i think it's important to remember that this story is not just about the alcatrazeleven. and it's not just about all the pows. it's about the values and virtues of the american military and about the values and virtues that make america what it is. but when you think about this group of servicemen and women, prisoners of war in vietnam, you have to realize that there has never been another group of american military servicemen and families that has endured more for longer effort in american history. and we should never forget that. and the other thing to take away from this is that any day, if you can open your door and walk outside, not a bad day. so everyone, thank you for coming. and once again, pows, thank you so much for being here for your service.
