>> reporter: yeah, hey, alex. we had hoped by now to be able to bring you that official announcement that this well was dead, that it would no longer ever leak into the gulf of mexico. but we're still awaiting any word from out at the well site. we do know that they had planned to do this last pressure test overnight. they had hoped to have it finished around midnight. and what that entails is they've cemented the bottom of the well, they put in 74 barrels of cement, they created this 1,000-foog plfoot plug, and thi test was exerting pressure on to the plug for a half-hour, steady pressure. and they needed to that plug holding. so now we're just waiting to make sure that they've done that test. and to hear the results of that test. we do expect that final announcement come from the national incident commander, admiral thad allen. at this point we don't have any idea when any type of announcement might come. >> we'll be waiting. when we get word we'll let people know. thank you very much. >>> five adults and eight

alex? >> is she going to face charges as a result? >> good question. police right now are still trying to determine that. they're still in the process of investigating this, trying to figure out what her motive was in all of this. once they finish their investigation, they will turn the case over to the prosecutor who will then determine whether or not she will face charges. she could face a misdemeanor charge of filing a false police report and she could even face a felony, though, alex. remember, the community has poured a lot of money into her medical recovery. so, the question now becomes, did she actually use that money? if she could, she could be facing fraud charges. these are still open questions that investigators are trying to figure out. so, they expect to know next week whether or not charges will be filed. alex? >> what a perplexing story. all right, kristen welker, thanks so much. >>> the mother of missing teen natalee holloway has confronted the suspect in her daughter's disa

. >>> i'm alex witt. at this hour, bp crews are in the middle of a process to seal that blownout well at the bottom of the gulf of mexico once and for all. a temporary cap stopped the gusher in july and later by cement from the top. but the well can't be declared dead until it is sealed from the bottom. kristen dahlgren is live with us in venice, louisiana. are we given any timeframe before we know if the well has been permanently sealed up? >> reporter: good morning, alex. we know that bp thinks it will be today. we could be just hours away from that word that everyone is waiting for that this well will never again leak into the gulf of mexico. it's an announcement that's 151 days into this disaster now. but here in these louisiana communities, it is still far from the finish line. 150 days after oil first flowed into the gulf, the flow of cement started. in what has been a months-long effort to finally seal the well from the bottom up. the cement was pumped in through the relief well. and at some point

>> reporter: hey, good morning, alex. they started pumping the mud into the blown out well at about 1:30 local time yesterday. it's likely, at this point, they finished that cementing and are waiting for it to cure. bp expects today to make the announcement the well is permanently sealed. it will no longer ever leak oil into the gulf of mexico. now, this is the culmunation. it took months to drill below the well. they connected with the well. the two wells were connected and they were able to pump the cement in through the bottom. they hope later today to have the bottom kill done. it's sort of an exclamation point. oil hasn't been leaking for 65 days now since the static kill back in july. it doesn't, however, mean that the oil is gone here in louisiana. they do still see it coming in almost on a daily basis in some of the marshes. in fact, here, they were able to collect about 25,000 gallons over the past week or so. so, still oil that they are dealing with. you can probably see, the boats still in slips here behind me.

i'm alex witt. welcome to nbc saturday. this developing now after spending less than 12 hours behind bars, lindsay lohan is out of jail this morning. the actress was released overnight after a judge sentenced to her 30 days for failing a drug test. we'll go live to los angeles where kristen walker is standing by for us. a very early morning to you. why was lindsay released just hours after she was sentenced? >> reporter: really a stunning turn of events here, alex. you are absolutely right. essentially the superior court judge ruled that lindsay lohan was only facing misdemeanor charges. therefore, she was entitled to bail, which she set at $300,000. lindsay posted that and was home at 12:30 a.m. this morning. as you mentioned, alex, earlier in the day a judge ordered lindsay to jail for 30 days without bail. he was essentially holding her there until her next court date. she was in court initially because she had failed a drug test just weeks after she has been released from rehab. so that's why sh
