alex castellanos. alex, if you get on the global warming, a good issue with the republican base, but look at this gallup poll. do you believe increasing earth's temperature is due to human activities? 352% say yes. natural changes 43%. so a majority of americans say humans are contributing to global warming. governor perry clearly questions and disputes that. if you look at breakdown bipartisanship it gets fascinating. global warming seriousness. is it exaggerated? 22% of democrats say. so 43% of end participants and 67% of republicans. so what governor perry is saying has clear appeal to republicans. but is he risking his potential support among independents and even conservative democrats by saying that? >> in all these issues you have to say what he believes. that's what he believes. it's even worse if you're inauthentic. but that's the concern about rick perry, one is that he appeal to the base but in a general election he could become george mcgovern. or even barry goldwater. candidates with intense support but unable to reach across the middle. and you ack sent that when you shoot from the lip as some texans are known to do. does he have mad cowboy disease? >> and eric, he talked today -- he joked, he mocked the president going to el paso and saying the border is as safe as it has been in recent memory. obviously he's a border state governor. obviously he has a unique perspective being from texas. but if you just look at the numbers, el paso, texas on the border is one of the cities in america with the lowest rates of violent crime. others are on the border, too, san diego and phoenix. el paso had 12 murders in 2009. if you go just across the border, the town across the border had 2,000. there is a town across the border. border patrol agents today, 20,000700 -- 20,700. the number of those people coming across the border is also down. so can the governor's credibility be questioned when he says things that numbers don't seem to support? >> oh, i think it depends on which numbers you look at on that, john. yes, the violence in el paso is down. look in the rural parts of texas, arizona and new mexico, that's where the violence is increased. likewise you have the drug cartels fighting their bloody war south of the border. right on the border you've got this operation fast and furious nonsense with atf down there. on the global warming issue, i see the gallup poll but there are other polls out there as well that show that a lot of the public doesn't know. this global warming is not going to be an issue in 2012. it's going to be jobs. yes, rick perry, i think alexis right, he's got to be careful what he says. he can get painted into a box. he can get in trouble. i think it's early. i think the big issue's going to be jobs when it comes to next year. but he doesn't want to get painted into a corner. >> and david, it is early. it's his first week on the trail. a lot of candidates say things they regret or take back or mod fight. barack obama yesterday took a pass on criticizing governor perry i bet in part because he said a lot of things he regretted especially as a young candidate early in 2007 and into 2008. but particularly drawing scorn from a lot of republicans and democrats is the idea that ben bernanke would be treasonous or treacherous behavior e if he ke putting money into the economy. rick santorum said this. >> he might say lots of things about misguided the policies. but you don't up the ante to those types of rhetoric. it's out of place. hopefully governor perry will step back and realize we're not in texas anymore. >> what is he learning, david, this first week on the trail with governor perry? >> he's playing in the big leagues. he's won three big elections down in texas. he said things people questioned but he sort of brushed them off an went on. now he's playing in the big leagues and he'll get a lot more scrutiny. i'm still laughing over the mad cowboy disease from alex. but i tell you this, the border statement today i didn't think much of. global warming, he didn't come out and call it a hoax at least. but i thought what he said about bernanke was a real gaffe. almost treasonous. we treat him ugly in texas. that kind of swagger is going to scare the hell out of a lot of voters. he's done well in the early polls. but i'm hearing in new york, i had people come up on the street and say i'm scared about rick perry and the kind of comments he makes. he'll play much better obviously in the south than a place like new york anyway. but there are some people out there now who are listening and say, oh, wow, i didn't realize he meant that. >> and to david's point, john, i think he's exactly right. it's different. it's big league pitching in the presidential campaign. it turns out, for example, there were two governors who signed a letter asking ben bernanke of all people to get moving with that $700 billion t.a.r.p. program. one of those governors was rick p

alex castellanos and david gergen. alex, i want to start with you in the room. if you get on global warming it's a huge issue and big issue with the republican base. but look at the gallup poll, do you think the increase in earth temperature is due to human activities, 52% say, yes, natural changes 43%. a majority of americans say humans is contributing to global warming. governor perry clearly questions and disputes that. if you look at it broken down by partisanship it gets fascinating. it isn't exaggerated, 22% of democrats say so, 43% of independents and 67% of republicans so what governor perry is saying has clear appeal to republicans but is he risking his potential support among independents and even conservative democrats by saying that. >> on all the issues you have to say what you believe. it's what he believes. it's only worse if you're inauthentic, but, yes, that's the concern about rick perry. one of them is that he appeals to the base but that in a general election he could become george mcgovern or even barry goldwater, candidates with intense support but unable to reach across the middle. and you accent that when you shoot from the lip as some texans are known to do, you know, does he have mad cowboy disease. >> and, he talked today, he joked, he mocked the president going to el paso and saying the border is as safe as it's been in recent memory. obviously he's a border state governor. obviously he has a unique perspective being from texas, but if uf just look at the numbers, if you look at the numbers, el paso, texas, on the border is one of the cities in america with the lowest rate of violent crime. others are on the border, too, san diego and phoenix. el paso had 12 murders in 2009. if you go across the border, the town across the border had 2,000. more than double the size of border patrol agents than in 2004. 1,200 national guardsmen across the border and if you look at the study and more attribute it to the economy than the obama administration but the number coming across the border is also down. can the governor's credibility be questioned when he says things that the numbers don't seem to support? >> i think it depends on which numbers you look at, yes, the violence in el paso is down, but in rural new mexico and texas, the violence is up. they are not coming across in el paso. and you had the drug cartels fighting the bloody border right on the border and on the border you have the fast and the furious nonsense with the atn. on the global warming issue, i see the gallup poll, but there are other polls that show a lot of the public doesn't know. this global warming is not going to be an issue in 2012. it will be jobs. yes, rick perry, i think alex is right, he has to be careful what he says. he can get painted into a box. he can get in trouble. i think it's early. i think the big issue is jobs when it comes to -- when it comes to next year, but he doesn't want to get painted into a corner. >> david, it is early. it's his first week on the trail and a lot of candidates say things they take back or modify, and president obama criticized governor perry probably because he said a lot of things as a young candidate 2007 and into 2008, but particularly drawing scorn from a lot of republicans and democrats is the idea that ben bernanke would be treasonous or treacherous behavior if he kept putting money into the economy. last night i had one of the lesser-known republican candidates rick san for rey san the program and he took a shot. >> you don't up the ante on the rhetoric and it's out of place and hopefully governor perry will step back and realize we're not in texas anymore. >> what is he learning, david, this first week on the tr

>> vega ( translated ): yes, i lost hope. i was desperate. >> simon: and so were the families who pitched tents outside the mine. they called it camp hope. and some never lost it, even though, for 16 days, there was no sign of life. what the families didn't know, and what has not been reported until now, is just how close their men came to doing themselves in. >> zamora ( translated ): i said to a friend, "well, if we're going to continue suffering, it would be better for all of us to go to the shelter, start an engine and, with the carbon monoxide, just let ourselves go." >> simon: were you the only one who suggested that, or were there other miners who felt the same way? >> zamora ( translated ): i think all of us. >> simon: all of you were thinking about committing suicide? >> zamora ( translated ): at that moment, it wasn't really committing suicide. it was to not continue suffering. we were going to die anyway. >> simon: we wanted to get some idea of what it must have been like down there. so we asked writer jonathan franklin, who obtained a backstage pass to the rescue operation, to take us down a nearby mine. it had been run by the same company. >> jonathan franklin: there's been quite a few mini cave-ins around here. >> simon: we had to scramble over rocks and rubble in pitch- black tunnels to get where we wanted to go-- to the part of the mine which most resembled the diabolical world where the men were entombed half a mile underground. now, we all knew that the miners spent 69 days underground. we knew it. but being down here is knowing it-- knowing it, really. i mean, the idea of 69 days here is terrifying. >> franklin: we're only one quarter of the depth that they were. one quarter. you'd have to go down another 500 meters. where they were, it was wet and humid. >> simon: even under these conditions, the men maintained remarkable discipline. they voted on everything. they stuck to a daily schedule-- a general meeting, followed by a prayer service. then, what they called dinner. franklin, who gained unprecedented access to the miners, has written a book called "33 men." he says the men always divided their food evenly, even when they were down to one teaspoon of tuna every 48 hours. but by day 16, he says, the miners were all starving, and realized they'd have to eat the first man who died. >> franklin: they told me that they had a pot and a saw ready. >> simon: do you think that the potential candidates knew who they were? >> franklin: one of the candidates told me that the guys had been joking, "hey, if you die in your sleep, you know, you're... you're going to be breakfast, lunch and dinner." so he... those last few nights, he said, he couldn't sleep. he was too afraid that if he died, that his companions would end up eating him. >> simon: mario sepulveda, who emerged as the leader of the group early on, says he thought it was only a matter of time. how long do you think it would have been before you had to do it? >> mario sepulveda ( translated ): i would say five or ten days. i don't know. but i was going to get out of there, no matter what. food or no food, i was going to get out of there. how? i had to think about which miner was going to collapse first, and then i started thinking about how i was going to eat him. i promise you, i wasn't embarrassed, i wasn't scared. >> simon: but they were saved by the drill. on day 17, it came punching through the ceiling. all thoughts of cannibalism and suicide disappeared into the dust. when the drill finally broke through, do you remember what you were feeling? >> zamora ( translated ): i was so weak, i couldn't even stand, and then all of a sudden, i found myself jumping for joy. it was like celebrating new year's eve or having a newborn child. >> simon: rescuers on the surface heard pounding on the drill. when they pulled it up, they saw paint on it, red paint. then, they found a note attached to the bit. it said, "we are fine in the refuge. the 33." they sent down a camera, and the world peered into the dark eyes of a stunned survivor. then, there they were-- 33 haunted men trying to appear cheerful, to wave, to smile for their families. they just couldn't pull it off. some had lost 50 pounds. mario sepulveda played the host in what became a reality show-- "survivor: underground." he took the viewers around what had become their home-- the casino, the clinic, the post office. and that's where conflicts with the rescuers began. psychologists were censoring and tampering with the letters the miners wrote and received. they wanted to keep the messages light and cheerful. the 33 were outraged. but tension turned into joy on day 69, the day of liberation. the fittest men went up first. mario sepulveda was the second to reach the top. he seemed happy to be there. victor zamora, the roof repairman, made a movie of it all-- the rescuer's landing, getting suited up for the ride. then, liftoff and 20 minutes in a magic capsule. the docking and a love scene. hollywood couldn't have done better. ( cheers and applause ) the 33 were treated to a victory tour. highlights? meetings with america's top celebrities; galas, where they just kept on receiving awards; an appearance on the david letterman show. miner edison peÑa didn't have the slightest idea who letterman was, but he was having a wonderful time. back in copiapoÓ, though, peÑa was hospitalized for anxiety and depression. and he was not alone. mario sepulveda, that most exuberant of men, is on heavy medication. the oldest miner, mario gomez, finds it impossible to sleep. and alexa? he can't explain why he's doing it, but he's building a wall around his house. >> vega ( translated ): whenever i hear a noise, i get scared and look all around me. my heart beats faster. i can't go into small spaces. i'm taking five or six pills a day now. if i don't take them, i can't sleep, and i wouldn't even be able to sit with you. >> simon: all but one of the 33 men, doctors say, have suffered severe psychological problems since the accident. and the miners complain they're not getting the quality medical care and benefits they need and were promised. 19 of them have already lost their disability payments. sebastian piÑera is chile's president. a couple of the miners told me that they feel like they're soldiers, they're heroes during the war. and when the war is over, they're forgotten. >> president sebastian piñera: well, that's part of life. that's part of human nature. they were heroes. they will always be heroes, >> simon: you know, if any of these miners get really ill,

>> when you look at the way president obama operates, he's a reasonable man. he assumes that everybody else is reasonable and that you can reason your way through these kinds of crises. the problem is that the position that eric cantor took was that they were willing to risk the default of the nation's credit. the president was not willing to risk that default. in the account that you mentioned it says when democrats met with the president, i believe in may of this year, he basically said to them, i can't look you in the eye and say that i'm not going to blink because i'm not willing to risk the credit of the country. this is a unique situation. i don't know quite how we go forward. it reminds me -- it's called the crazy man theory. when nixon was in the white house and negotiating with the north vietnamese. he told his national security adviser let them think i'm crazy, that i might go nuclear. i think we know this president is not going to go nuclear. in a way that's a disadvantage in his dealing with the folks on capitol hill. >> short of using the crazy man philosophy here do you see something the president could have done to handle this more effectively? >> if you look at the polls over the next week, tea party approval is at 18%. the country is rather agast at their tactics. it looks like they were in the minority of the minority bullying the president and turning a housekeeping detail into a crisis. i think standard and poor's lowering the credit rating was a political judgment. i think they pointed fingers at the dysfunction of capitol hill. the dysfunction of capitol hill happened primarily because you had a group of people who didn't want to negotiate and were willing to take the country over the cliff. i think the tea party loses politically. they have outsized leverage within the republican party and in washington. it's really a disconnect, i think. if you held the 2010 elections over again today, i don't think the tea party would come out the big winner. >> interesting. >> but we can't rerun elections unfortunately. >> what about how imper ty pep it for the president to make progress on jobs and how can he go about doing that?
