my name is alex cooley i'm professor of political science at barnard and also hammond institute's deputy director for social sciences programming and on behalf of the herriman institute. the peace building of columbia university, i want to welcome you to this book launch, "the kurdish spring: a new map of the middle east," authored by david phillips sitting here to your right. david is director of the program on peace building and rights at columbia university's institute for the study of human rights and he has worked as senior adviser to the united nations secretariat and as a foreign affairs expert and senior adviser to the u.s. state department. he's held positions at different academic institutions including the director of american university's program on conflict prevention and peace building he has been a visiting scholar at harvard center few middle east studies and a fellow at harvard university's future diplomacy project. he has written numerous books, this is the latest one, and he has been involved in peace building operations, practice theory analysis throughout the world.
