alex hogan's life in new york with that story. reporter: hello, jon.as an emotional day for people gathered with essentially strangers and then became friends to not only mourn but cried together over some of those lives that were lost. it was a tearful day, here at a nursing home in brooklyn as it marked nearly one year since the march 25 order to send recovery and covid-19 from hospitals back to nursing homes. >> nobody protected them. they did not all have to die like this alone. no one deserves to die alone. >> there were 37 men in his unit and they just dwindled down to, when my father passed there were only seven men left in his unit. it was devastating. it was devastated for us and all the other families and it was the wrong decision. reporter: during the early months of the pandemic it was a measure for other states took as well. a federal investigation is under investigation whether cuomo altered the data on the deaths. the state attorney found that they under reported deaths by 50% by not including those who died at hospitals. today's event i

arthel: alex hogan, thanks, alex. eric. the centers for disease control has issued some new guidelines and, you know, parents are, well, man, probably welcoming this. cdc now says students can stay only 3 feet apart when they're in the class and still be safe. that, of course, cuts in half the initial guidance that we've been had of 6 feet apart. this update could, obvious, pave the way for reopening more schools and getting the kids back in the classroom. lucas tomlinson live in washington with more on this and, lucas, i bet students are breathing a sigh of relief over these new guidelines. what's the response? >> reporter: and their parents as well. the cdc is teaching kids a lesson in subtraction. many parents hope the move will get more of their children back to in-person learning. previously, the cdc said children had to be 6 feet apart, revised guidance now says students can sit 3 feet apart in classrooms if they wear masks. plastic barriers are no longer required, 6 feet should be kept in common areas such as the lun
