alex libby is now 15 and his mom jackie libby joining us here.have to be happy that you managed to change the rating without changing the film. first to you lee hirsch, the success in getting the motion picture associationing to go along with you on this. >> you know, we are so overjoyed. it's great to be here, andrea. thanks for having us. this was an incredible movement. we saw a petition to the mpa started by a 17-year-old sund from michigan that had over a half a million signatures, members of congress, celebrities, people were just up in arms about this rating. it was an unjust rating. and yesterday, the mpa reversed their decision, broke their own rules and gave us the pg-13. we had to take out three of the "f" bombs in the film but we were able to retain the critical scene where you see the bullying. i think this is a victory for all the people that raised their voice, speaks to the bigger conversations with the mpa. but today we're here to celebrate the family that's with us on the show. this growing movement. and really this opportunity

. >> that was alex libby only two years ago. ng alex is joining me along with his parents, jackie and philip libby. also with us this morning is cynthia lowen. she's a producer on the film. welcome to all of you this morning. alex, i'd like to start with you. it's been two years since that clip we saw actually took place. what is it like for you to watch that? >> well, it just makes me think back to a time where kids were ignora ignorant, and like, back then, i was just stupid and took it. >> i'm sure it was a painful time. just tell me how things are for you at school now. >> a lot better. i've gotten lots of friends and working on keeping my grades up. so great so far. >> jackie, you didn't know that your son alex was being bullied at school, and in many cases, parents don't know. looking back, were there signs? were there behavioral issues or anything like that? >> there were, but there had been for quite some time, and we thought it was -- he was becoming a preteen, and we just didn't know any better. >> let's bring in cynthi

. >> here with us, is filmmaker, lee hirsch, along with alex libby.took his own life after experiencing harsh bullying. welcome to all of you. i saw this documentary. and there was so much attention on its rating. and not enough attention on its content. i thought it was so moving and powerful, three. what prompted you to take this on? >> i was bullied as a kid. and you carry those memories. you have a story you can connect to. you can really tell from the heart. i wanted to give a voice to that experience. it's so hard. people talk about bullying. and you hear kids will be kids. a lot of people felt like they didn't have the agency to talk about these experiences. so, film was about giving people that noise. >> many updares lines in the movie is about you, alex. lee captured you getting bruised, punched, choked, stabbed by a pencil. really abused by other kids. and it was so upsetting and heartbreaking for me to see that. what was it like for you, alex, to have that happen? and i don't think this was the first time. >> it happened every day. i just w

lee herch and two of the film's subjects that you just saw alex libby and david long.m last night. it is incredibly powerful. why, lee, did you want to make a film about bullying. >> i was bullied as a kid. you carry that. you carry that memory. you carry the scars of that. and particularly i felt that inability to communicate what happens and get that support and so you want to do something that you can connect to. that you have the love for, that you care about. the film was really about giving voice. it was about giving voice to kids that go through this. to adults that have gone through it you know, i think there is such a big national conversation to be had. just by letting people talk about it and connect to those memories or what's happening in the moment. >> alisyn: alex, some of the most heart breaking parts of the film were watching you with your peers on the bus and you were pushed and poked and threatened and, yet, you didn't come home and tell your parents. why were you keeping it a secret? >> well, -- two reasons. i was kind of embarrassed that i was gett

you'll remember one of the kids in that doc, alex libby, day after day, beaten on the school bus willa faceting new mem roir called "mrs. kennedy and me" written by the secret service agent in the motor vad when jca was assassinated. he said he still feels guilty he couldn't save the president. that story and much more ahead is on "starting point." we'll see you in just about ten minutes.
