much of the cross-examination had been focused on the financial crimes and allegations against alex murdaugh dating back about a dozen years. but what we're watching the prosecutor do is go minute by minute at some points second by second what murdaugh was doing the night of the murders. and so much of it was hinged on what he said that he was never down there at the ken untilnels that was not true, he had lied to law enforcement. and waters has continued to talk about the fact that this is a story that keeps changing. he had repeated saying that this is a story that you are now telling. and at some points disdain for alex murdaugh who has tried to answer some of these, but has not come up with exact answers for certain periods of time. and wife e've seen a back and f. and waters told us about three to four hours of cross- cross-examination and we're roughly at that mark today already. and we're just into the night of the murders. this is going to continue. we're watching this prosecutor essentially saying this is alex murdaugh, he has hadmitted on te stand that he had lied to his family and

so the prosecution is relying on that evidence to place alex murdaugh in the location at those kennelsthat will bode very badly for murdaugh if the jury hones in on that evidence because of course that shows a consciousness of guilt if alex murdaugh was in fact manufacturing an alibi and this evidence in fact places him at the scene. >> also yesterday this remarkable moment where the defense and prosecution are talking to the judge without the jury present about this testimony, this testimony will alex murdaugh's alleged financial crimes. you have the former cfo of the law firm where he worked saying on the morning of the murders, she confronted him about a whole bunch of missing money. it all happened without the jury present. do you think the jury will end up seeing that testimony knowing about the financial anxllegatio as part of a motive? >> of course the prosecution doesn't have to prove a motive, but juries always want to hear a motive in a murder case. you have the who, what, where, how and why. and the why doesn't have to be proven to prove a case beyond a reasonable touts,, bu

perhaps something alex murdaugh's attorneys weren't favorable to. i paid careful attention to the language when they called him to the stand. they said, mr. alex murdaugh wishes to take the stand as to indicate this is his choice. he is the client. he is the defendant. ultimately, it does come down to him. he had a lot of explaining to do, which he has done this morning. he offered a lot of details. first off, starring right out of the gate, allegation that he shot his wife or his son. then continuing on to say that he lied to investigators about being at the crime scene very close in time to those murders because he was paranoid, because he didn't trust investigators and he felt this opioid addiction he had made him additionally paranoid and fearful. he said, once i started lying, i kind of had to keep going with this story. there's been a lot of tearing, sobbing even from the stand as he recounted finding those two bodies, especially it's been the case throughout the trial. so the jury is not seeing him weep for the first time. they have been seei

you know, you only need one juror to decide that they like alex murdaugh. testified, his remaining son buster testified that his dad was distraught on the night that he discovered his wife and son murdered and if a juror sitting there thinking i don't believe that this man, even though he's a drug addict and even though he's stolen money, even though he's lied, i don't think he would blow the brains out of his younger son and kill his wife. one juror may be convinced that the fact that the son is testifying on his dad's behalf and saying he was distraught, that might be enough for one juror to be a holdout and not see a conviction in the case. >> i wonder what you think about him admitting he lied. on one hand, he's admitting he lied about something but he's saying he didn't kill his wife and his son. so he's giving something, right? is that -- does a jury sort of look at that and say okay, that's actually helpful he's coming clean about something or do they just say he lied about something he's definitely lying about other things, too? >> it's a double edg

thank you for all of that. >>> right now, we turn to the trial of alex murdaugh, who was accused of murdering. the defense today calling murdaugh's former law partner to the stand to testify about the night of the murders. randi kaye is outside of the courtroom in south carolina. so what did this former law partner reveal in court today? >> reporter: we're talking about testimony from the former law partner and very long-time friend of alex murdaugh. he was called by the defense, but he really seemed to help both the defense and the state in parts of his testimony. first off, he revealed there was some sloppiness to the crime scene investigation, which the defense has been laying the groundwork saying that the investigators for the state did make some mistakes at the scene. he talked about the feed room, which is where the body was found. there were parts of a skull that he discovered still there when he went to take a look at that feed room. he also helped the state by analyzing that 8:44 p.m. video from the night of the murders. he said it was alex murdaugh's voice on the recording take at

obviously it did not work and alex murdaugh -- we heard him on a recording from a rehabilitation center in georgia telling law enforcement about this plot earlier in the trial. this is the first time we've heard alex himself in the flesh talk about doing this. this was something the defense had initially worked to keep out of this trial, arguing that it would prejudice the jury against him. the state has said that shows irrational behavior from alex murdaugh. they used that when they're talking about what they say he does when he's, in their words, backed against the wall or there is accountability coming for him. the way murdaugh described it it was a man who didn't want to live anymore. he felt there was going to be more information coming out about his financial crimes that jean was discussing there and he thought it would be humiliating for his only surviving son buster. we anticipate to hear more about this and the financial crimes during the cross-examining of the prosecution. i was speaking to one of the attorneys who represents one of alex's victims in those financial crimes. i
