>> alex perez in louisiana leadings off. alex, thank you. >>> we are also tracking severe storms right now. a tornado on the ground as we come on the air tonight. the pictures coming in from nebraska. in fact, storm and tornado watches are up in a dozen states, amid triple different heat elsewhere. let's get right to meteorologist rob marciano with the track of these storms tonight. rob? >> reporter: good evening, david. get right to that severe weather. tornado watch up for the northern plains. already one reported on the could see a couple of strong ones in the next couple of hours. also watching tennessee valley and coastal carolina. tomorrow, minnesota in through indiana. of course, the more wide-reaching story is the extreme heat, from new york all the way to texas. could be the first official heat wave for the new york area with temps over the next three days in the 90s. and here in florida, unusually dry. so, no koofling thunderstorms in the afternoon. so, much of the eastern half of the country enduring dangerous heat

abc's alex perez is on the scene, outside chicago. >> anybody in that house? >> i don't know. >> reporter: complete chaos in this suburban chicago neighborhood. >> no one inside? >> oh, my god. >> reporter: a small plane crashing right in the middle of the street in plainfield, illinois, igniting a fireball that neighbors say could be seen for blocks. the impact causing an explosion, engulfing the side of this home in flames. andrew maksimik was fishing nearby, and recorded this said owe. >> i felt the heat over there. i heard the plane flying very low, and that's when i looked up and seen it coming down very phat. >> reporter: patti daniel was inside the home in the living room, dozing off, when suddenly it seemed the whole house was about to come down. >> it got really loud, and next thing i knew, the whole side of the dining room just blew open. >> reporter: the aircraft first took off in florida and was headed to wisconsin. officials believe the only person onboard, the pilot, was killed in the crash. >> we're very fortunate to have a plane crash in a crow

abc's alex perez on millions now bracing for severe weather tonight. >> reporter: a desperate search under way in dallas tonight for an offduty university police officer, his car swept away by a violent flood. the vehicle discovered late this afternoon, but still no sign of the officer. >> it appears the water came up pretty quickly, which afforded the officer little time to get out of his car. >> reporter: as water officer called 911. but help couldn't arrive in time. >> the water level was extremely high. >> reporter: from flooding in texas to havoc in the heartland, 130 reports of damaging winds this independence day. >> way i see it, it just picked it straight up and set it down over here. >> reporter: and a confirmed ef-2 tornado tearing through this walmart in eastern kentucky. and tonight, this tornado just spotted in western minnesota, with 22 million americans from the east coast to the upper midwest in the path of severe weather. and david, here in minneapolis they are bracing for hail, 75-mile-per-hour winds and possibly even isolated tornadoes. david? >> alex, thank you.

abc's alex perez has the latest. >> reporter: this morning, a manhunt under way in baton rouge for aaining suspect who authorities believe was part of a plot involving at least three other men officers in this louisiana city. >> we took those threats as being credible. >> reporter: police arrested two men and a 13-year-old boy after abu burglar attempt at this pawnshop and seeking ammunition to take down officers. >> was going to cause harm to police officers in the baton rouge area. >> reporter: it comes on the death of alton sterling last week. it caused a week of chaos here which saw hundreds of protesters arrested and led many to question if police were too heavy-handed. law enforcement officials say it was this threat to kill officers, why they took such aggressive tactics. >> very real and viable threats against law enforcement. look what happened in dallas. a very peaceful protest and then some crazy mad man did what he did. >> reporter: and authorities say they have recovered six of those eight stolen handguns, the searchor ongoing. george. >> okay, alex, thanks very much. >>
