here's abc's alex perez. >> reporter: as investigators in iowa expand their search for 20-year-old mollietonight, for the first time since she vanished, mollie's mother speaking out. >> you can't give up hope. if it were me that were missing, mollie wouldn't give up hope. >> reporter: she says she knew something wasn't right when mollie didn't show up to work. >> it was panic because that is so out of mollie's character. >> reporter: the university of iowa student was last spotted going for a run in brooklyn iowa july 18th. investigators believe she returned home that night. but are unclear about what happened next. the fbi zeroing in on mollie's digital footprint. critical information from the social apps she used including gps data collected from her fit bit. authorities now widening their investigation, searching a hog farm and other properties near deep river, iowa. those searches have turned up empty, and they have ruled out her boyfriend and friends as suspects. her family says they will not give up hope. >> thank you, alex. >>> when we come back here, the emergency landsing on chic

abc's alex perez from the scene tonight. >> reporter: this bird's eye view showing that monster blast ravaging main street in sun prairie, wisconsin. entire buildings leveled. thick clouds of black smoke filling the air. there was this big boom, and it knocked me to the ground. and i felt it, like it took the breath out of my body. >> we need to get everybody away from the building. >> reporter: authorities say a contractor working nearby cut through a gas line tuesday night. officials quickly evacuated most of the area, but about 40 minutes later, that monster explosion. tricia budig witnessing the aftermath. >> there were flames, there were cars on fire. some of the buildings, all of the windows were blown out. >> reporter: that devastation still smoldering hours later. >> buildings sheared right off of their foundation. tons of debris. >> reporter: authorities confirming volunteer firefighter cory barr died from his injuries after responding to the scene. five other firefighters were treated. barr was a 15-year veteran of the force and leaves behind his wife and twin daughters. dav

here's alex perez. >> reporter: they were driving home just outside minneapolis, but this loving mothernd her adult daughter, seen here on a recent trip, never made it. karen christensen and her daughter, jena, tragically killed, crushed by an 800-pound boulder that slammed into their car, after flying off the truck in front of them. the driver of that vehicle allegedly fleeing. investigators quickly working to zero in on the driver, spotting the boulder, which measures about three feet by three feet, on surveillance video, tracking the truck to a landscaping company. >> by having that photo, we were able to do our good old police work, pound the pavement. >> reporter: and tonight, arresting that driver accused of leaving the scene, 33-year-old joseph czeck. >> there it goes! >> reporter: debris on roadways blamed for tragic accidents across the country. according to aaa, in a four-year period, there were more than 500 people killed, 39,000 injured and some 200,000 crashes. charges against the driver are pending. he could face vehicular homicide. david? >> alex, thank you. >>> and to th
