ktvu alex savage is here now with the details on this latest deal. >> alex and christina, this is a settlementt has been years in the making. attorney general rob bonta, among those accusing the sackler family of helping to manufacture and market opioid products for decades, fueling addiction across the country. purdue pharma, the company owned by the sacklers, manufactured oxycontin, the powerful painkiller at the heart of this agreement. under the deal, they will give up ownership of purdue worth $900 million and pay out up to $6.5 billion in cash. since oxycontin hit the market in 1996, experts say opioids have been linked to hundreds of deaths. thousands. i beg your pardon? hundreds of thousands of deaths. money will go directly to families of victims, and some will be set aside for future settlements. bonta is one of 15 state attorneys general who were involved in negotiating this agreement. he said our state is likely to receive hundreds of millions of dollars for. >> the harm that purdue pharma and the sackler family have caused through their practices is immeasurable, and the opioid ep

i'm frank mallicoat, and i'm alex savage. >> the u.s. attorney's office, in conjunction with the fbi, the u.s. postal service and the irs have all scheduled a news conference for tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. to announce what they call a significant law enforcement action. this announcement does not specify the target of the law enforcement action, but the san francisco chronicle reports the announcement will include the results of a corruption investigation against former mayor sheng tao. >> citing an anonymous source, the san francisco chronicle reports that xiang tao has been criminally indicted by a grand jury following that investigation. that source did not provide details about what charges tao might face in ktvu has not been able to independently verify the report. ktvu reached out to the former mayor but has not heard back. ktvu henry lee has more, including a timeline of the events that could lead to the indictment of a recalled mayor henry. >> yeah, stunning news with reports of tao's apparent indictment. let's take a look back a

this afternoon i'm cristina rendon and i'm alex savage. >> here's the latest we know at this hour. late today, authorities said five people have died in those fires. the victims were killed in the eaton fire, which is burning near pasadena and altadena. more than 1000 homes and other buildings have been destroyed by the flames. firefighters from all across california have been called in to help out, and the national guard is also responding to southern california. >> ktvu greg lee here. now to kick things off with the latest developments. >> greg, christina, alex, these fires growing out of control all over southern california in preparation for the santa ana winds. crews were pre-positioned in danger areas. but still, it was not enough to contend with four major blazes popping up. and now, as you said, that death toll is rising. the la sheriff confirming at least five people have died at the eaton fire, the light of day revealing a path of ongoing devastation. cars burned out, entire neighborhoods leveled, flames ripping through other homes along pacific coast highway. the los ang

. >> and i'm alex savage. authorities just gave us an update this afternoon. the l.a. county sheriff said that he has asked for assistance from the california national guard. the sheriff also said the number of confirmed deaths is five. but he went on to say that number is expected to grow as they begin to sift through the rubble. the sheriff also said this afternoon that he is working on implementing a curfew that would be in place in those two fire zones in pacific palisades and also in the altadena area. that curfew would be in effect between 6:00 at night and 6:00 in the morning, and it could start as early as tonight. >> and again. several fires are burning right nown southern california. the two largest are the palisadesire near the coast, and the eaton fire. at last check, the two fires have burned nearly 28,000 acres. and we're also following another fire. this is in woodland hills. it's called the kenneth fire near calabasas on the la ventura border. this just cropped up in the last hour or so, not far from highway 101. >> and obviously, the last thing that so

i'm alex savage and i'm cristina rendon. >> already we are learning what's being called the palisades fire has burned a number of homes. and pacific coast highway was shut down at last check. this fire has grown to more than 1200 acres. >> now we have team coverage on this emergency in southern california. let's begin with greg lee, who is monitoring the situation from our newsroom. greg, what's the latest? >> alex, good afternoon to you, the governor, just now in the last couple of minutes, telling reporters that fire has now exploded to 1300 acres. the fire started just before noon with a large plume of smoke rising over the santa monica mountains. fire officials again holding a news conference as we speak, talking about the resources helping on this fire, as well as saying more than 13,000 structures are threatened right now. officials say at least 30,000 people have been told to evacuate their homes, and confirmed multiple structures have already burned. as you said, the pacific coast highway is shut down at this hour. that fire exploded quickly this afternoon, fueled by intense w

i'm alex savage, and i'm claudine wong. >> commissioner ricardo lara says they are rules designed to bring home insurers back into the state and end that drought of insurance available. ktvu tom vacar joins us live from the newsroom with what's ahead. >> tom, what could go wrong? well, plenty. a move to resolve the home insurance crisis in california, much of it done in secret, may actually cause more delay. this is what the deputy insurance commissioner told ktvu on december 12th about the new emergency insurance regulations. essentially effective immediately. >> under the reforms, we're putting in place, insurance companies, in order to utilize these risk tools like like modeling, they have to write more policies. that's the change and will enforce that through our rate authority. >> the promise was that the regulations would force insurers to sell policies equivalent to 85% of their statewide market share, including in wildfire areas. >> we think that long term, this is going to help stabilize rates, because right now people are experiencing balloon premiums and rate spikes, but t

. >> and i'm alex savage. that new fire broke out today as crews continue working to try to fully contain two large fires that have been burning in l.a. county. here's what we know so far about the hughes fire. it started just before 11:00 this morning near castaic lake, and it has exploded in size. it's now more than 8000 acres burning through all of that dry brush and trees. and it's being fanned by gusty winds in this area. evacuation orders have been issued for more than 19,000 people in this region, including several schools in the area. the smoke could be seen from neighborhoods in valencia, including from the magic mountain theme park. now let's give you a live look, if we can, at the scene of this fire this afternoon and this fire again burning in near the community of castaic, which is sort of north of santa clarita, right along interstate five. and at last check, interstate five shut down in both directions because of this fire and all of the smoke it's putting off. so interstate five closed near the

i'm alex savage. >> good afternoon, i'm frank mallicoat. according to the indictment, tao promised favors at city hall, all in exchange for money and campaign support. all in the lead up to the 2022 election. >> ktvu jana katsuyama joining us now live from our newsroom with more on the charges and reaction to them. joanna. >> well, alex and frank chantal's attorney tells me that tao just learned of these charges yesterday. she maintains that she has done nothing wrong. but the u.s. attorney's office says that they have evidence that tao and her partner covered up bribes. a stunning announcement at san francisco's federal building friday. the u.s. attorney's office unsealed the eight count indictment accusing former oakland mayor sheng tao and her partner andre jones, along with two oakland businessmen, david wong and his son andy wong, of bribery, conspiracy, mail fraud and wire fraud. the 22 page indictment alleges the scheme started in 2022, just before tao was elected mayor of oakland in november. >> weeks before that election, tao made
