new at noon, alex savidge joins us live to explain what's happening today and why it's so important. alex? >> reporter: this was a very important ceremony for those people who live in that part of san bruno, as they work to repair the neighborhood. i want to show you the focus, the crater down by glenview and earl. this is the spot where neighbors and city leaders came together early on today to help fill in this huge hole left over from the blast. one by one people dumped shovels of dirt into the hole. it marks a major milestone in the recovery and rebuilding process. for people who lived fire the deadly pipeline explosion, one year ago, this was an emotional step forward today. >> it was an obvious experience -- it was an awful experience. we were hoping this would be part of the healing process and close up the hole and look for a better life in the newture -- in the future. >> my neighbors couldn't be here so i did two scoops. i told the gomezs i would do their scoops for them. >> reporter: the pipeline at the bottom of the crater has been capped. it will never be used again. but
