ktvu alex savidge is in planton to tell us what investigators know so far. >> reporter: investigators say that body found inside one of the 45-gallon plastic garbage cans and was left here. investigators confirm this was a body of a female. they don't know the proximate age but they are certain it was not a child. the discovery was made yesterday. that neighbor didn't open the can when officers looked inside, they found the body. it was partially decomposed. pleasanton police at this point can't say how that person died they are treating this as a homicide. investigators now talking with neighbors trying to figure out exactly how long this body had been there. they are also looking at other nearby missing persons cases. >> many of the local agencies that have open cases for missing persons we have been in contact with them. we are reviewing all of the track fliers that go out in the area. so that is something we will continue to work on and until we can identify the body. >> reporter: and because the search is still ongoing at this point for 15-year-old sierra lamar from morgan hill.

alex savidge joins us live from morgan hill with more on the plans for this mornings search. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, to you. there will be a somber tone as today's volunteer search effort gets under way. it will start a few hours from now at 8:00 this morning. everyone gathering at burnett elementary school. organizers expecting a good turnout. there was a feeling of sadness as volunteers came together after hearing a suspect has been charged with the kidnapping and murder of sierra lamar. the 15-year-old last seen on march 16th getting ready to leave for school and since then hundreds of people have taken part in this search effort organized by the class kids foundation. volunteers are now more determined than ever to find sierra. >> i believe then that we have to find her and we have to end the ambiguity for the family. they can't be left out there not knowing what happened to their child. >> reporter: and yesterday the santa clara county sheriffs dive team was back out searching the reservoir. her son went fishing there. and in the mean after the volu

alex savidge is live there with what will be done with the remains. alex? >> reporter: well, good afternoon, tori. an attorney for santa clara county told me this morning he's asking a judge to grant permission for archaeologists to deal with this. this is the area where they came across 15 pine box coffins. workers immediately began stop digging. >> this was a little bit of a jaw-dropper. not something you would expect. >> reporter: old maps show this was the site of a some tarry back around the surn -- back around the turn of the century. mostly the poor and indigent buried here between 1875 and 1935. at some point, those plots were paved over. >> it's my understanding this was purposely done to take folks who were indigent who didn't have next of kin or didn't have a plot that they could afford. this was a way to -- to deal with a dignified -- a dignified way of dealing with their remains. how it gets covered under and buried over so to speak, i don't know. >> reporter: cortez says work crews building a new loading dock at valley medical center had no id

alex savidge joins us now from the scene which is near hayward with what witnesses saw. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, to you pam. firefighters say neighbors saw a man with a gas can on the front pour of of this home. he hopped into a waiting suv and sped off. three people were inside that home including a 60-year-old vietnam vet who is a double amputee. he is being treated this morning for smoke inhalation at the hospital. two other people inside both of them care givers they both jumped out of side windows to escape the fire. firefighters also rescued three kittens from inside the house. there were scary moments for the people inside. >> i heard pop like that. i heard a big pop and then i saw flames. >> and then what did you do? >> reacted. >> how did you react? >> with water and a bucket. just started trying to put it out. >> reporter: the alameda county sheriffs office investigating this fire as the case of arson. no arrests so far. this morning the motive for the fire unclear. the people that live here have no idea why they would be targeted. it was a coup

alex savidge joins us live from near morgan hill to let us know what searchers are focusing on today. >> reporter: well, when i talked to sierra's mom this morning, she had a new sense of optimism and that's because investigators found a car any believe is directory lived to her abduction -- linked to her abduction. and we saw volunteers searching for evidence most varied by this significant -- motivated by this significant new development. volunteers scoured the brush along highway 101 near bailey avenue this morning, hoping to find that next piece of evidence that can lead investigators to sierra lamar. >> they did get a clue. that's given them hope. so maybe we can generate some more clues from that clue and hopefully solve this thing and bring sear home. >> reporter: everyone out here excited to hear investigators have located this red volkswagen jetta seen investigator times on surveillance cameras. the sheriff's office is not saying where the car was found or if detectives are focusing on the registered owner but investigators say they have every reason to believe sierra is stil

alex savidge has followed the story since our 4:30 a.m.ewscast and now he tells us if residents can go home. >> reporter: from chopper 2, you can see the care at ther is of this morning -- at the center of this morning's manhunt. the contra costa county sheriff's office says inside they found a man dead from what appears to to be a self- inflicted gunshot wound. investigators say he's the same man who opened fire on police earlier in the morning triggering a large-scale search. neighbors heard the gunfire. >> well, the notes are -- the shots are very loud. but it echos around here. i heard three or four more shots and i heard shooting back. >> reporter: oakland police were chasing the man when he fired on several officers. none of them were hit but bullets struck two police vehicles. the gunmen were able to escape and police locked down the area warning team people to stay indoors. >> normally i leave my doors unlocked because it's pretty safe around here. >> reporter: it all started this morning and police tried to pull the man over for a

ktvu's alex savidge is out there telling us what they are demanding before they agree to leave. alex? >> reporter: well, good morning, dave. a representative from occupy the farm told me within the last 15 minutes she's hopeful about a proposal they sent to uc berkeley yesterday. essentially, they are asking for continued access to this land and continued access to their crops and protesters say in turn they will agree to take down their tent. after much discussion yesterday, the group occupying the gill track came up with several demands, including they want some sort of a sharing arrangement for this piece of land owned by the university. they also want continued water supply for their crops and community access for the field as well. they sent that proposal over to uc berkeley yesterday. the university has said they will not discuss any sort of sharing of the land with occupy farmers until the tent city comes down. a representative from occupy the farm i talked with a short time ago said she's hoping university officials will be open to a dialogue. >> it's hard to say obviousl

alex savidge has more. >> reporter: a short time ago a representative from the alameda county coroner's office told me the driver involved in this accident was 40 years old, from daly city. he was killed in in single car crash that happened early this morning that triggered a blackout on the san mateo bridge. the driver hit the utility box. the traffic is going westbound. we do understand that all lanes are back open. repair work is going on on the eastern section of the span. this crash happened around 12:30. a white suv lost control, hit the center divider and then knocked out power to tom -- to some of those street lights. the man who was driving that suv died on the scene. the chp doesn't think that alcohol played a role. we understand that caltrans will not have the power fully restored on the bridge. as we come back out here to a live picture. you can see there is a heavy backup on the westbound direction. let's check in with sal castanedo for that. >> you know, alex, what you are seeing there is a debris -- backup from a debris spill on this bridge that happened went last half-ho
