alex savidge joins us from lafayette where the storm created a huge sink hole. alex. >> reporter: it will likely take months before we finally rebuild this roadway that collapsed out here yesterday. crews will begin later on this morning using an excavator so they can dig out debris from this creek and eventually secure this sink hole. that is the ultimate goal in the coming days. heavy rain over the weekend. overflowed this creek that runs underneath mountain view drive. the pictures are impressive. the problem here was the culvert they clogged with debris. under ground utilities were compromised in the collapse. a gas line was capped right away and crews were able to create a sewer bypass to keep waste from going into the creek. for a short time the biggest challenge was dealing with the 12-inch water main that is connected to a large tank just uphill. >> if that one does break if it breaks it all the way through there will be a million gallons of water coming from that tank on the hill. >> reporter: if that water line broken, the neighborhood would have been e

that is where alex savidge is at the scene. alex. >> reporter: i just got an update a couple minutes ago from a berkeley police spokesperson. she told me the victim in this shooting thatten had overnight was a woman in her late 40s or early 50s. she was shot while riding here bike. this is right outside of long fellow middle school. about 3:30 took away the woman's body. she has not been identified. i did touch base with a coroner this morning. berkeley police were called out here around 11:30 last night. a lieutenant on scene told me quickly came to realize the woman had been shot at least once. she was pronounced dead at here. they spent hours processing this crime scene. >> obviously a loss of life is a significant thing. we want to make sure we catch the person or persons responsible. >> the lieutenant told me this morning there is no information rob the shooter they are looking for in this case. also he says it's much too early to talk about a possible motive. the spokesperson i just spoke with told me this shooting that ha

ktvu alex savidge is at the scene and i know you have video of flames shooting up from this broken pipehat you will only see right here on channel 2. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning. this was a very tricky situation for san francisco firefighters. because not only did they have to contend with the fire that was burning inside this home, they also had to deal with a second fire coming from the curb side gas valve just outside the place. pg&e told me the fire from the home impacted the gas meter and this was not a faulty line. flames shot about 15 feel up in the air. crews had to focus on putting out the fire inside the home. eventually pg&e came in and shut off the gas line. the fire first started just before 1:00 this morning on the 100 block of athens street. four people were inside the home at the time. two people were sent to the hospital with possible smoke inhalation. the man that lives next door told me after the fire broke out someone came in telling him to get out. >> grateful. it was pretty smoky downstairs when they woke me up. luckily the neighbors right here ca

alex savidge has more on how a traffic stop turned into a much larger situation. alex? >> reporter: well, now that the sun is coming up, the team is going to resume searching for this team, somewhere in the cordova creek. the man is suspected of drunk driving and ran from officers during a traffic stop. it happened earlier in the morning. he jumped into the creek in an area where the water is moving very quickly. authorities put a boat in the water right away to search the bas ofthe creek but there was no sign of the man. this all began after midnight when ross police made a dui stop on the man's car near sir francis drake and college. but during the field sobriety test, this man took off running from officers. officers watched him go in the creek and eventually lost sight of him. >> they followed for about 100 yards trying to encourage the person to come out of the swift water. he swam away from the officers. the officers followed him as far as they could until they couldn't anymore. >> reporter: now, the ross police chief said he isn't going to release the name of the

ktvu alex savidge is live on walnut street. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning. the sergeant here on scene told me in this case a woman was found stabbed to death early this morning. officers are still out here on scene. you can see a couple patrol cars parked out here on this street. the stabbing happened inside this apartment building in a second floor unit. we'll show you video we shot a short time ago. this is all taking place in the 5800 block of walnut. neighbors called 911 just about two hours ago. around 2:30 this morning. when officers aryed here on scene they went inside this unit and found this woman with multiple stab wounds and she died here on scene. a sergeant told me a short time ago police do have a possible suspect. a man in custody at this point. they are not saying much about who this person is. and the motive at least at this point according to the sergeant remains unclear. in addition, oakland police also investigating a second deadly shooting. another crime scene. two people who were found dead shot to death. this all happened early this mo

alex savidge is in san francisco with video of flames shooting from that gas line. alex. >> reporter: i can also tell you two people were sent to the hospital after this early morning hour fire. hou -- house fire. you can hear and see pg&e crews out here. they are working on this natural gas line that ruptured and was on fire when this fire broke out around 1:00 this morning. a dangerous situation. flames were shooting from that line about 15 feet up in the air. battalion chief tells me crews had to work around that ruptured gas line to put out the fire inside the home. a two story place here on the 100 block of athens street. pg&e crews came in and were able to shut off that gas line. arson investigator is looking at what triggered this two alarm fire and why that gas line ruptured and caught fire. >> we did have a shut off for the gas that we believe gas pipe melted. due to the fact a fire coming from the front of the building. that's what we see now. >> reporter: this home is a total loss. four people were inside at the time. two of them were checked out for smoke

alex savidge is live where a woman riding her bicycle was gunned down there. alex?reporter: good morning. the woman was likely in her late 40s and early 50s. so far she's not been identified. she was riding her bike along this stretch of sacramento street late last night when she was shot to death. the circumstances before that shooting still unclear for berkeley police. this shooting happened right now next door to the yard here at longfellow middle school. this street was blocked off for several hours early this morning as investigators gathered evidence out here. just a few hours ago, the coroner came in and took away the woman's body. berkeley police got this call around 11:30 last night 911 calls came in. a lieutenant described this as a seemingly innocuous call, except when officers arrived, they saw the woman was shot. she was pronounced dead on the scene. investigators are looking for witnesses and leads. but the lieutenant says it's too early to say -- to say what a motive is. again, investigators at this point, don't have a lot to go on. they don't really

alex savidge joins us to tell us about a major donation announced. >> reporter: a couple of hours agog&e and a local lawmaker pitched in money to rebuild the park. this part is fenced in because and arsonist destroyed it. after that act one community group stepped up and started fund-raising. the head of take back antioch accepted a check this morning from pg&e and then a surprise, two last minute donations and extra two grand from pg&e and from jim frazier, that put them over the top. it has all the money it needs to start construction on this playground. >> this means we can move forward and our community is going to be even more unified. it is even more driven to help take back our state. >> back in september the tot lot at city park in antioch was intentionally set on fire, destroying a special place for kids in this area and causing $250,000 in damage. insurance didn't cover everything so take back antioch started raising the rest of the money to rebuild the playground. >> to see that burned down, it is just sad, so i knew that we needed to turn that negative image into a positiv

alex savidge has more. >> reporter: good morning.ally fired up the heavy equipment and are trying to get this repair work all done here. well it should take several months. they have work to do today to dig out the debris. they are also pulling out big chunks of pavement from the sinkhole itself. that was all because of heavy rain. the creek that runs underthis roadway flooded and that caused the roadway to collapse. this is the la fayette creek that goes right under mountain view drive. the huge sinkhole compromised. a gas line had to be capped immediately. a sewerline was broken. it had to be diverted. there was also a 12-inch water main that came close to rupturing but it didn't. the pipe that diverts the creek water got backed up. >> a number of logs, a whole bunch of debris from upstream, came down the creek, plugged the culvert, the water had nowhere to go but over the top and it created and eddy, which eroded the soil. crews worked quickly to put some fixes in place last night. they used the line to pump waste from one side of

ktvu's alex savidge joins us live from the scene with video you will only see on channel 2. alex? >> reporter: well, good morning. the fire inside of that home is what triggered a second fire that came from the curbside gas valve right outside the home. that's why you see pg&e crews still doing last-minute repair work to patch up the road where they had to dig things up to access that line. that second fire coming from the gas line certainly made things difficult for firefighters this morning, as the fire ripped through both floors of the home, and flames from the natural gas line shot 15 feet in the air. the homeowners had to wait for the pg&e to turn off the gas line. this started around 1:00 on the 100 block of athens street. there were four people inside the home at the time of the fire. two of them were sent to the hospital with possible smoke inhalation. a neighbor i talked with this morning told me he feels lucky this fire didn't spread to his house next door. >> grateful, you know, it was pretty smoky downstairs when they woke me up. luckily, the neighbors right here came

ktvu channel 2 reporter alex savidge is out there with what caused this mess and the work needed to fix it. good morning, alex. >> reporter: a flooded creek is what caused this huge sink hole out here in lafayette. later on crews will be back out here at the scene of this collapse here. they will be using an excavator you might be able to see. it's been brought out here so they can dig degree out of this creek and eventually hopefully secure this sink hole entirely. it will be a long slow process to build this roadway that collapsed yesterday. it could take months to do that. yesterday heavy rain overflowed the creek. and then late in the afternoon the soil eroded and the pavement just gave way. that is what created the sink hole. under ground utilities were camp mused in the collapse. a gas line had to be capped immediately. crews had to create a sewer bypass to keep waste from running into the creek. there was a 12-inch water main that came close to rupturing but stayed intact. the problem out here the culvert that diverts water under the roadway got backed up. >> numberover logs. who
