ktvu alex savidge is in oakland with the video and the search for the drivers. alex. >> reporter: and this morning the chp is investigating this freeway side show. it happened right in the middle of 880 in this area of the freeway right next to the coliseum. and it was in the middle of the day only saturday. the dangerous stunt was captured on video. this is the video that was posted on youtube over the weekend. it shows several cars doing donuts right in the middle of the freeway. at the time traffic bus brought to a standstill. the video lasts less than two minutes until someone yell out five-o. warning that chp officers were on the way. everyone hops in their cars a and takes off. they were not able to catch the people involved in this stunt. other drivers that have scene the video are concerned. >> i would hope that whoever is responsible that highway patrol or whomever do what they need to do to make sure it doesn't happen again. >> reporter: the chp has tips which they hope will lead them to the drivers that shut down this freeway. i did talk with a chp dis

alex savidge is out there in hayward. just spoke to the woman's neighbor. >> reporter: good morning. i just talked with a neighbor a few minutes ago. she told me she is worried about this elderly woman injured in this fire. firefighters had to rescue her from her second story apartment where you can see heavy damage here from the outside. a lot of the roof and the area outside the door was burned here in last nights fire. the woman herself who was inside suffered both burns and smoke inhalation. the fire began just about 9:30 last night at this 20 unit complex that is right near the intersection of second and e streets in hayward. crews on scene tell us it was a fairly small kitchen fire. that is how it began. but as crews made their way through the unit, they found this woman inside and she was unconscious. however, firefighters did say the woman had a pulse when she was transported to eden hospital. her next door neighbor i talked to a few moments ago told me she is trying to stay optimistic. >> i hope she is okay. we do know she suffered burns and stuff l

alex savidge is live right now at city hall with what city leaders are expected to say. alex what are they expected to say? >> reporter: well, they are supposed to come up with some solutions some ways to try to curb the shootings. it was a particularly violent weekend in oakland. this announcement will involve both the mayor and police chief. again it will happen within the hour. the announcement will take place right at the spot where three-year-old carlos nava was killed back in 2001. you may remember this shooting. the young boy hit by a stray bullet and right now there is a mural that has been painted in that area in his honor. no one from oakland police or the mayor's office has culled me back. we do understand the focus will be on the four homicides in oakland this past friday and the 11 people wounded by gunfire over the weekend. just last night five people were shot at a birthday party. the surge in violence has led larry reid to be called as a state of emergency. the move would free up funds from the state. now many in oakland agree with the councilman. >> i thi

ktvu's alex savidge was the first reporter on the scene and tells us why investigators are calling this fire suspicious. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, tori. it appears suspicious because this is an abandoned building on the pier and it caught fire in the middle of the night. this whats a challenging battle for the firefighters. i want to -- this was a challenging battle for firefighters. here's why -- they had access issues all morning long. they couldn't go out on the pier because of the danger of it collapsing. they had to spray water from the shoreline. but they cannot access a lot of hot spots. that's the reason that a fire boat had to be called in a short time ago from pittsburg to help out. we watch as that boat sprayed water on the underside of the pier where a lot of the wood was continuing to burn. now, the fire broke out just about 3:00 this morning. this is here lowering and jackson in crockett, right on the waterfront and next to the sugar factory. crews caught this fire defensively from the shoreline spraying water on it from the shore and eventually got th

ktvu's alex savidge joins us live with new details about this bar pilot's past. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning. a coast guard spokesperson tells me there will be an update on this investigation coming after the team is briefed at 8:00 this morning. we do know that investigators will be sitting down later today and talking with the pilot at the controls of this 750-foot oil tanker when it struck one of the bay bridge towers. he's identified as george close with eight years experience. he did pass an alcohol test yesterday and the results of a drug test may come back today. yesterday's accident yesterday after the vessel was heading back to sea. there was heavy fog in the area at the time. that cut visibility on the bay to just about a quarter mile. this double-hauled vessel struck the wood and barrier that sports the bridge on the western span. caltrans says there was no structural damage. the ship just unloaded 350,000 barrels of crude oil at the shell reminery in martinez when the accident happened. there was no oil spill as a result of the crash.

[ sirens ] >> our cameras caught that pursuit as it made its way up 880 and across the bay bridge. this was all around 11:00 last night. the driver was arrested at 14th street and south va vanness. the chase was -- van necessary. the chase stopped with spike strips. >>> a vehicle crashed into tree around 1:45 on hicks road in san jose. authorities drive the driver as a young male adult. a female passenger was also in the car. no word what caused the driver to lose control. >>> police say a man who robbed a bank in mill valley last night play have also robbed a bank in green bay earlier this month. now, last night's robbery happened around 5:45 at the union bank. it is the 6th bank robbery in marin since december 12th. investigators say the same man may have robbed a union bank in green bay on january 9th. police describe the suspect in both cases as white, in his 40s or 50s around 6 feet tall with blue or green eyes and scrufffy fa

alex savidge is in oakland with how city leaders are trying to ease fears about racial profiling. reporter: well, as part of this plan to bring on former police chief brill bat -- bill bratton, the city council during their vote included an amendment, essentially emphasizing that racial profiling will not be tolerated in any form or fashion as part of whatever strategies are put into place. early this morning, this meeting stretches the early -- the early-morning hours, i should say, four hours of public comment took place during the meeting. many people were frustrated by the final vote. ktvu's alex savidge has been there since 4:30 this morning tells us police have been scouring the area for any signs of the suspects. alex? >> reporter: and good morning. i did just get off the phone a short time ago with a spokeswoman for the oakland police department who confirmed to me this is still a very active manhunt in the area. as i step out of the way, you can see the street is still blocked off. we're pushing you down seminary avenue. you can see the s.w.a.t. vehicle there. a number of others remain in the area trying to -- officer s remain there. they believe they have the suspects in the perimeter. they are still actively searching. the spokesperson said they've written search warrants to go inside homes as well. this began at 6:30 last night when an undercover police officer was shot and wounded during a stakeout operation. three gunmen were seen running off. police were able to take one of those men into custody. but two others escaped. throughout the night, officers were going through here with guns drawn, doing a canvass for those two men. >> obviously with an incident

ktvu's alex savidge is in san francisco with what sparked the violence and who police are searching for this morning. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning. relatives say this was a heated argument over laundry that apparently prompted this attack yesterday. this man accused of setting his girlfriend on fire is still on the loose this morning and police are hunting for him. in the meantime, the victim in this case, a mother of 3, remains hospitalized with burns to her face and her chest. relatives tell ktvu she's 25- year-old star lamarr. she's now being streeted at saint francis hospital burn -- treated at saint francis burns center. her injuries are life- threatening. they are trying to track down dexter oliver, her boyfriend. he's accused of dousing her on gasoline and setting her on fire in the middle of the street. this attack happened yesterday around noon near hollister and jennings street in the bayview district. police say oliver used gas from one of the canisters at the couple's home. victim's says this fight began at a nearby laundromat. they disagreed about whether t

ktvu's alex savidge tells us a 12-year-old boy was among three people who were shot. alex? >> reporter: well, as thousands packed the waterfront last night, someone opened fire here on embarcadero close to pier 2. a total of two people shot here. one of them a 12-year-old boy. he was hit in the foot but is expected to be okay. now, this happened about 11:30 last night, as people were waiting for the fireworks show to begin in san francisco. along with the boy wounded, a man was grazed in the hip by a bullet. san francisco police say both of those shooting victims are being treated for nonlife- threatening injuries. at this point, it's unclear why the shooter began to fire or who their intended target was. just about an hour before that, there was another shooting along the waterfront. this one close to fisherman's wharf, near jefferson and mason. one person shot in the hand. police say that person's injuries request are not life- threatening. a search for the gunman came up empty. i put in a call to the police department's spokesperson about updates. i've not heard back so

just a short time ago, alex savidge spoke to the victim's grieving mother. alex? >> reporter: well, good morning, the mother of the man who died in this double shooting told me she would really like witnesses to come forward and help out police. at this point, investigators have only a limited description on this gunman who, early this morning, just about midnight, opened fire on two cousins. it happened here on the00 block of naples -- 1100 block of naples street. the relatives gave me this photo, 43-year-old daniel cologne, a father to one son who grew up in san francisco. relatives say he and his cousin were walking home from a nearby bar when the shooting happened. daniel cologne died at the scene. his cousin, andrew cologne, was shot in the upper body and taken to san francisco general hospital. the mother -- the mother of the man who died says she can't believe this happened and doesn't have any idea why anyone would target her son or andrew cologne. >> i don't know. i don't know. i don't know who who want to hurt my son or my nephew. >> reporter: relatives

ktvu alex savidge is there now with the latest on the woman and her fire damaged apartment. what do you know alex? >> reporter: we do know this woman was in very bad shape when firefighters pulled her out of that burning apartment. it's the second story unit here at this complex in hayward. you can see a lot of damage from the outside. this was an elderly woman who suffered from burns and smoke inhalation. after this fire started about 9:30 or so inside theout. we're right in her second and e street. crews on scene told us it was a fairly small kitchen fire to begin with. as crews made their way through the unit, they found this woman inside and she was unresponsive at the time. firefighters did say they were able to get a pulse on this woman once she was transported to the hospital. crews tell us this wasn't a large fire by any stretch that left this woman injured. >> we were able to extinguish the fire fairly quickly with an aggressive interior attack. we did find a victim within the home. they found him in the bedroom during a primary search. >> reporter: no one else aside

ktvu channel 2 reporter alex savidge joins us from the apartment complex with more on the victim and the damage to his home. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning. neighbors say the man that was hurt in this early morning fire is the landlord of this five unit apartment complex. the fire broke out here in his front unit where as you can see firefighters had quite a bit of work to do this morning as they pulled out debris. this is some of the degree that was pulled out. this call came in just about midnight. the fire was burning here on acton street. firefighters say when they got here they saw a man suffering from smoke inhalation and minor burns. he was trying to put the fire out himself with a hose. as flamesser to through his apartment neighbors heard him screaming for help. one woman described what he heard and did. >> i just heard some popping sounds and then i heard him yelling call 911. and so that's what i did. >> reporter: the chief out here told ktvu this fire at this point doesn't appear to be suspicious. there will of course be an investigation to figure out exactl

alex savidge is right there. what happened? >> reporter: the man that suffered the minor burns is actually the landlord of this five unit apartment complex. the flames broke out inside his unit which is the frontout where we are standing. you can see here firefighters had to pull quite a bit of charred debris outside of his place this morning as they were battling the flames. captain told ktvu this fire was burning through the attic mostly. the call came in after midnight. berkeley fire crews responded to hack ton street. when firefighters got here they found a man that had been hurt trying to put out the flames inside the apartment using a hose. as fire burned through this place neighbors heard him screaming for help. he was transported to the hospital. >> there was smoke coming out of the attic. there was one person transported to the hospital with minor burns and smoke inhalation. >> reporter: the captain told ktvu this fire doesn't appear to be suspicious but there will be a full investigation to figure out how it started.

alex savidge was first on the scene.s us with an you have date on the efforts to shut that water off. is that water still going? >> the flow of that water has dispated but as you can see here, it's still rushing from the middle of the intersection here where this water main broke early this morning. a police lieutenant i just talked with told me crews have been called in here to try to cap this water main break. as you can see has closed several lanes of traction here at the intersection of jackson and santa clara streets this morning. police doing traffic control in this area. let me show you what this looked like earlier this morning when the water main burst just after 3:30 this morning. a lieutenant told me the cause of the break remains unclear at this point. he also couldn't tell me how big this main is. but firefighters were called in initially to cut off the flow of water. i'm told the situation was a bit more complicated so city work crews are now coming in and we did just see some of the city work crews arrive

alex savidge.s. >>> a teenager is recovering in the hospital overnight after being shot in san bruno on lynn den avenue and santa theresa way. the teen was taken to the hospital and now is in stable condition. >>> police finished clearing several streets after a fatal accident there. the crash happened at 2:30 on south first. and margaret streets. the coor veered off the side of the road hitting a couple of lamp posts before flipping upside down. a 22-year-old man was in the vehicle. he was pronounced dead at the scene. they are investigating how it happened. >> they responded to a haz-mat square overnight. a security guard at pacific biosciences smelled a strange odor and felt nauseous. they arrived on scene and decided to launch a haz-mat situation. they are not sure what type of substances were stored in the billing. they put on haz-mat suits and set up a decontamination area. >> we set up a warm zone, cold zone and cool zone. and we prepared an entry team and we set them up to go in and investi

ktvu reporter alex savidge is going to have more on what the chp is looking for and reactions from driverscoming up at 5:00. >>> also in oakland a crash involving an ambulance and a tanker is being investigated. that happened at about 9:30 last night on interstate 80 right near the powell street onramp. a tanker somehow hit an ambulance and crashed into a guardrail. the tanker was empty so fortunately no hazardous materials threat. and also the ambulance was not transporting anyone at the time. no one was hurt. >>> san francisco firefighters say years of intense training paid off when they rescued an elderly man trapped inside his burning home. fire crews were called to a home yesterday afternoon. they found the garage burning, the home filled with smoke, and elderly man that could not walk in an upstairs bedroom. firefighters immediately got the man safely out of the home and rushed him to the hospital. >> we train and train and train for this. and it makes it all worthwhile. it's a risk. we won't take risks without the rewards. and knowing that this is at stake, we took considerable risk

alex savidge is there now with more. >> reporter: neighbors are telling us the man who was injured ine landlord of this five-unit apartment complex. this is the place that caught fire. the front unit here. we're told by a fire captain that most of the fire was burning actually up in the attic of the unit. there was quite a bit of dark to the -- quite a bit of damage to the unit. this call came in just about midnight. that's when berkeley fire crews responded to this apartment on acton and bancroft way. this one inside the home, he was hurt and suffered minor injuries and some smoke inhalation as he was trying to put out the flames inside his apartment using a hose. according to the people in this area, he was transported to the hospital. a number of people nearby heard him screaming for help and called 911. a fire captain described for us what the first crews on scene were dealing with. >> there was smoke coming out of the attic. one person was transported to the hospital for minor burns and smoke inhalation. >> reporter: because of the heavy damage to the unit, the unit is unliveable
