alex stone, abc seven news. >> more danger ahead. alex. thank you. news is putting together a special episode of 2020 about the wildfires in los angeles. tune in tonight at nine for american catastrophe. l.a. burning, you can watch it on abc seven tonight. and then tomorrow on hulu. san francisco has a new fire. chief. today, mayor daniel lowery announced that veteran battalion chief dean crispin will serve as the city's 27th fire chief. crispin is a 34 year department veteran and a san francisco native. he served as a captain and battalion chief at several stations across the city, and was recognized three times for bravery. a majority of justices on the supreme court appear ready to uphold a law that would likely ban tiktok in the u.s. the court heard arguments for and against the ban this morning. it will take effect after january 19th unless tiktok's chinese owned parent company, bytedance divests from the platform. the company argues the law violates the first amendment right to free speech. but the u.s. government says the app poses a national

we get the latest now from abc news reporter alex stone in altadena. just devastated by the eaton fire. alex, what can you tell us? >> hi, kristen. we just heard from the l.a. fire department, and they say on the pacific palisades fire. they now see with an aerial survey, many thousands of homes that have been destroyed or buildings that have been destroyed on this fire. the l.a. county fire department has no idea at this point how many have been destroyed. you can see this behind me. this is what it looks like. every street. street by street. this was a chiropractic office, but the homes look exactly the same. it is just a gray ash right now. and still there is a lot of fire fighting going on. almost unimaginable scenes in los angeles. abc's chopper giving us a gut wrenching view of the devastation from multiple fires burning in southern california. >> really never seen any destruction like this before. everything is gone. >> block after block of homes destroyed in pacific palisades. heavy smoke lingering in the air. at least five people are confirmed

abc news reporter alex stone has the latest from altadena.avaged by the eaton fire in southern california, thousands of firefighters and first responders are working around the clock to contain the historic destruction from several major wildfires burning for five days now. >> while firefighters report they are making progress battling the blazes, that progress could be in jeopardy as a forecast is calling for a return of more powerful santa ana winds. the hurricane strength gusts that helped the fires intensify last week. >> these winds, combined with low relative humidities and low fuel moistures, will keep the fire threat in los angeles county very high. >> la's fire chief says they are ready. >> every available lafd firefighter is on hand and will remain in place through this wind event. >> firefighters from across the country and from mexico are arriving today to help. over 100,000 people are under evacuation orders, the sheriff saying he knows people want to return to see if their homes are still standing, but it's just not safe. >> som

alex stone, abc seven news. >> alex, as the wind conditions change, how has that affected the air qualityright. pushing the smoke one way. or perhapsng not at all. and i'm wondering how you're experiencing it. >> yeah. the air quality is not good. everybody, all of our team here, everybody is wearing masks. i've got mine right here that i'll be putting on right when we're done. and around l.a. it's been pushing this fire, especially because the palisades fire has been pushing out toward the ocean and not real populated areas because of the direction the winds are pushing. but this one has been pushing smoke right into glendale and burbank. and really the heart of the l.a. area. so people who have breathing problems and the elderly have been told to be careful to stay inside, run their air conditioning, run air purifiers in their homes to try to help them out in that way. but it is just complete devastation here. everything is gone. the magnitude of this is incredible how much burned those images are. >> so tough to see there. alex stone, we appreciate your reporting. thank you so much. we

they have been unable to fly because of the strong winds here. >> julian alex stone live for us theren altadena. we really appreciate it. and please stay safe. we know rapidly these fire conditions can change. thank you so much alex. meanwhile, crews from alameda county, oakland, hayward, fremont, menlo park, they have all joined a strike team formed by cal fire to help fight the flames in los angeles county. the san francisco fire department sent 22 firefighters to the palisades fire. they could be there for up to two weeks, depending on how things go. cal fire's division for the san mateo and santa cruz counties also have joined that response there. and we want to share with you some really dramatic video here. the wildfires can be seen burning from space. you're looking at satellite images showing the scale and spread of the fires, and also how southern california's strong santa ana winds created critical fire weather conditions there. and to get a better understanding now of how the weather played a big role in these wildfires, fierce santa ana winds again led to that red flag war
